McGehee's single lifts Marlins past Giants
May 17, 2014 - 6:47 AM San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Casey McGehee singled in the go-ahead run in the ninth inning and the Miami Marlins eked past the San Francisco Giants, 7-5, in the second meeting of a four-game series.Christian Yelich and Derek Dietrich, who both homered earlier in the night, both reached to start the ninth, and McGehee slapped a one-out base hit to right off Santiago Casilla (1-1) to knock in Yelich and break a 5-5 tie.
Garrett Jones' infield single pushed across Dietrich for an insurance run, and Steve Cishek closed the door in the bottom half to post his eighth save.
Yelich scored four times, Jarrod Saltalamacchia broke out of an 0-26 slump with four hits and Mike Dunn (4-3) pitched a scoreless eighth to pick up the win for the Marlins, who had dropped six of seven coming in.
"It's been a tough go for us...but we don't quit," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said.
Pablo Sandoval doubled twice, drove in a run and scored another to highlight the Giants' offense, but it wasn't enough as the club fell to 10-5 during its stretch of 17 games in 17 days.
"Today just didn't go our way," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.
Both starters gave up five runs -- four earned -- in their respective outings. Henderson Alvarez surrendered 10 hits over six frames for the Marlins, while Yusmeiro Petit yielded seven in his five-inning spot start of Tim Hudson.
The teams traded runs in the first as Yelich recorded his first career leadoff home run with a shot to deep center and Sandoval doubled in Angel Pagan.
Dietrich found the seats in right with a two-run blast in the third, and Adeiny Hechavarria's sacrifice fly an inning later made it a 4-1 game.
The Giants began chipping away the next half-inning with a sac fly by Brandon Crawford and a run-scoring, two-out double by Brandon Hicks.
McGehee made it 5-3 with a run-scoring single in the fifth, and Buster Posey drove in Pagan with a flyout deep enough to right.
McGehee's error at third kept the home sixth alive and put runners on first and second, and Gregor Blanco tied it at 5-5 with an RBI single to center.
Game Notes
Hudson was sidelined with a left hip strain but is scheduled to make his next start ... Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton went 0-for-5 to snap a personal-best 17-game hitting streak ... Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez underwent successful Tommy John surgery in Los Angeles on Friday. The reigning NL Rookie of the Year winner will need at least 12 months to fully recover.
