Marlins use late offense to take down Rangers

Jun 11, 2014 - 5:41 AM Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Christian Yelich finished 4-for-6 with two doubles and four RBI, including the go-ahead two-run single in the seventh inning, which lifted Miami to an 8-5 victory over Texas in the opener of a two-game interleague set on Tuesday.

Garrett Jones knocked in a pair of runs, while Casey McGehee added three hits, a run scored and an RBI and Justin Bour went 3-for-5 and crossed home twice for the Marlins, who have won two in a row and six of their last eight.

Miami tied a major-league record with its 13th straight interleague win, matching the mark set by the Yankees and Devil Rays who finished off their respective runs in 2004.

"We have to try and keep it rolling tomorrow. I don't know what that is or why we've beaten so many American League teams. I guess we like playing against them," Yelich offered.

Bryan Morris (5-0) fanned two over 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the win. Steve Cishek turned in a quiet final frame to notch his 15th save.

Robinson Chirinos knocked in two runs, while Brad Snyder and Rougned Odor drove in one each for the Rangers, losers in four straight and six of eight.

Jason Frasor (1-1) was charged with the two deciding, yet unearned, runs while recording two outs in the seventh.

"In the end, we didn't play the defense we were capable of playing. That hurt us," Texas manager Ron Washington said. "We shot ourselves in the foot."

Bour began the rally against Frasor with a one-out single then Jeff Mathis reached on Odor's fielding error. Adeiny Hechevarria's fly out managed to advance both runners into scoring position. Neal Cotts was summoned but yielded the deciding hit to Yelich, which glanced off Adrian Beltre at third, scoring both to put the Marlins up 6-5.

Tanner Scheppers walked Giancarlo Stanton to begin the eighth, then scored on McGehee's single compounded by errors from Scheppers and Michael Choice which left McGehee on third. He came home when Jones followed with a double and the visitors took an 8-5 edge.

"The add-on runs are big," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "In the end, we got some hits and ran the bases aggressively and kind of put some pressure on them."

A.J. Ramos tossed a scoreless eighth, then Cishek retired the side in order in the ninth.

Texas picked up a run in the second, as Alex Rios and Snyder's hits put runners on the corners for a Chirinos sacrifice fly.

Miami countered in the third as Ed Lucas walked, Stanton doubled and a Jones groundout scored Lucas. The Marlins forged ahead one frame later with Bour's leadoff single followed by a Mathis walk and Yelich's two-run double two batters later.

McGehee plated Yelich with a sixth-inning single to make it 4-1, but the Rangers countered with four in the home half thanks to a bases-loaded walk by Snyder, another Chirinos sac fly, a wild pitch scoring Rios and Odor's infield single which brought in Snyder.

Game Notes

Miami starter Tom Koehler worked 5 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on as many hits while striking out seven and walking three ... Texas counterpart Colby Lewis worked five innings and gave up three runs on seven hits with four walks and three strikeouts ... The Rangers fell to 2-6 on their current homestand which ends on Wednesday's series finale.
