Final/10
McGehee, Marlins edge Pirates in 10 innings
Jun 15, 2014 - 10:59 PM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Casey McGehee tied the game with a two-run double in the eighth and won it with a sacrifice fly in the 10th to lift the Miami Marlins to a 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the finale of a three-game set.Rafael Furcal singled to begin the 10th and was replaced by pinch-runner Ed Lucas, who moved to second on Reed Johnson's sacrifice bunt. Jared Hughes (3-2) then intentionally walked Giancarlo Stanton and both runners advanced a base when Hughes uncorked a wild pitch during McGehee's at-bat.
McGehee ended it when he lifted a fly ball to right, which plated Lucas.
"It's one of those feelings you can't describe until it happens," McGehee said of getting a walk-off RBI.
In the half inning prior, Pittsburgh wasted a bases-loaded, no-out situation. Russell Martin grounded into a 5-2-3 double play and after A.J. Ramos (4-0) intentionally walked Pedro Alvarez to re-load the bags, he struck out Clint Barmes to escape the threat.
McGehee went 3-for-4 overall for the Marlins, who snapped their three-game losing streak.
Andrew McCutchen, Gregory Polanco and Josh Harrison each posted two hits, while Polanco also tallied a run for Pittsburgh, which had its four-game winning streak snapped.
The Pirates plated a run in the third and another in the fourth to jump ahead.
Polanco hit a one-out single in the third before coming home when Starling Marte whacked a double into left. Marte went to third on the throw to the plate but was stranded there. After McCutchen walked, Ike Davis grounded into an inning-ending double play.
Martin walked to start the fourth and scampered to third on a Pedro Alvarez single through the hole on the right side. Harrison whacked a base hit into right to plate Martin and make it 2-0.
The Marlins never advanced a runner past second until the eighth when they finally broke through with a pair of runs to tie the game.
Jeff Baker and Furcal began the frame with singles against Tony Watson before Johnson and Stanton both fanned. McGehee, though, came through with a clutch two-out hit when he lined his double into center to bring home Baker and Furcal.
Miami didn't muster many chances against Pittsburgh starter Vance Worley, who made his season debut. He struck out five and scattered five hits over seven scoreless innings.
"Threw all his pitches for strikes and moved the ball basically all around the strike zone," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said of Worley.
Adeiny Hechavarria hit a two-out double in the second before Mathis flied out to end that mini-threat.
Miami wasted leadoff singles by McGehee and Garrett Jones in the fourth. Marcell Ozuna struck out and Hechavarria rolled into a double play to squander that opportunity.
Game Notes
Marlins starter Henderson Alvarez struck out six and allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks over seven frames ... Miami went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position, while Pittsburgh finished 1-for-7.
