Utley's walk-off blast lifts Phillies over Marlins in 14
Jun 27, 2014 - 5:56 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Chase Utley's game-winning homer in the 14th inning helped the Philadelphia Phillies to a split of a four-game set with the Miami Marlins with a 5-3 win on Thursday.Jimmy Rollins reached on an infield single to begin the inning before Utley slammed his sixth homer into the seats in right to make a winner out of Justin De Fratus (2-0), who allowed a hit and a walk over two scoreless innings of relief.
Chris Hatcher (0-1) served up the longball from Utley to absorb the loss.
"Having Jimmy on first base, a base-stealing threat, you assume (Hatcher) is going to come after you a bit," said Utley. "I swung at a bad pitch ball two, then I was able to square one up."
Philadelphia starter Cole Hamels gave up three solo home runs among six hits and struck out seven without a walk in seven innings of work. He had surrendered just four homers in his first 12 starts this season.
All three Miami homers were leadoff blasts, with a Marcell Ozuna drive to left-center field putting the Marlins ahead 3-2 in the seventh.
The Phillies, however, capitalized on an error and tied the game in the bottom of the inning.
Miami went to the bullpen as Bryan Morris relieved starter Tom Koehler, who allowed two runs on seven hits, fanned six and issued no walks over six frames.
Domonic Brown led off with a pinch-hit single, advanced on a sacrifice bunt, reached third on a groundout and scored when first baseman Jeff Baker bungled a grounder by Jimmy Rollins.
"It was unfortunate that we weren't able to hold that lead," said Marlins manager Mike Redmond. "That's what happens."
The Marlins looked to reclaim the lead, forging a two-out rally to load the bases against Jake Diekman in the eighth, but the Phillies lefty struck out Ozuna to foil the threat.
Miami opened the scoring in the third on Jarrod Saltalamacchia's first home run since May 2, and Giancarlo Stanton doubled the advantage with a liner to left field in the fourth.
The Phillies loaded the bases in the home fourth and got a sacrifice fly from Carlos Ruiz. In the fifth, Utley dumped a Koehler offering into short right- center field for a two-out single, plating Ben Revere with the tying run.
Game Notes
Hamels has gone at least seven innings in 10 consecutive starts, a new career high ... Stanton tied Miguel Cabrera for fourth on the Marlins' all-time home run list with 138. Dan Uggla is first with 154 ... Miami third baseman Casey McGehee singled in the fourth to extend his road hitting streak to 17 games ... Philadelphia went 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
