Lucas lifts Marlins over Phillies in 11th
Jul 2, 2014 - 4:59 AM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Ed Lucas singled home Jeff Baker in the 11th inning to lift the Miami Marlins to a 5-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday in the opener of a three-game series.Marlon Byrd and Cody Asche hit back-to-back homers in the eighth inning to tie the game for the Phillies, who didn't put another runner on base the rest of the way.
The Marlins, who snapped a four-game losing streak, went to extra innings for the 13th time this season after leaving runners on second and third base in the ninth inning.
In the 11th, Baker led off with a single against Justin De Fratus (2-1), went to second base on Christian Yelich's sacrifice bunt and scored when Lucas sliced a hit over the head of first baseman Ryan Howard.
The Marlins broke a three-game slide in extra-inning games.
"It was nice to be able to finish one off," said Lucas. "It was good to be able to dump one in there and get us out of here for once."
The Phillies suffered their fifth straight loss and dropped to 2-9 since going on a season-high five-game winning streak.
Miami starter Henderson Alvarez left with a 4-2 lead that reliever Kevin Gregg coughed up in the eighth inning on the two-out homers by Byrd and Asche. Byrd cracked his 16th homer to left-center and Asche hooked his fifth fair down the right-field line two pitches later to make it 4-4.
"We came back with a couple swings of the bat and then not a baserunner (after that)," said Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg.
Phillies reliever Antonio Bastardo escaped a jam in the bottom of the ninth when he struck out Garrett Jones with runners at second and third base.
The Marlins are undefeated in the last nine games started by Alvarez, who gave up two runs on seven hits and a walk in seven innings.
A.J. Burnett, who started his career as a Marlin, faced Alvarez for the second time in a week and allowed four runs -- three earned -- on six hits and four walks in six innings. He struck out 10.
The Phillies took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Jimmy Rollins hit a one-out double and scored on Chase Utley's lined single to center field. Domonic Brown added an RBI single up the middle in the fourth to make it 2-0.
The Marlins loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fourth and tied the score on Jarrod Saltalamacchia's bloop two-run single to center.
Another single to center, this one by Giancarlo Stanton, gave the Marlins a 3-2 lead in the fifth.
A passed ball by Phillies catcher Cameron Rupp later in the fifth put runners at second and third and Miami took a 4-2 lead on Burnett's wild pitch in the dirt, which struck out Marcell Ozuna swinging but got away from Rupp, allowing Stanton to score.
Game Notes
The Phillies, coming off a 2-6 homestand, started a 10-game road trip. They are 5-4 against Miami this season (the teams split a four-game series in Philadelphia last week) ... The Marlins played six extra-inning games in June, including five that went at least 13 innings -- losing all five.
