Campbell's hit helps Mets drop Marlins

Jul 13, 2014 - 3:18 AM Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Eric Campbell's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the New York Mets to a 5-4 win over the Miami Marlins in the second game of three from Citi Field.

The Mets worked a two-out rally in the eighth to secure their sixth win in seven games. Travis d'Arnaud doubled to left off Mike Dunn (7-5) to set up Campbell, who pinch-hit for Kirk Nieuwenhuis and poked the game-winning hit into center.

"Everyone always says hitting is contagious," said Campbell. "That's the kind of roll we're on right now. We're all getting big hits and driving in runs."

Vic Black (2-2) earned the win for a scoreless inning of relief and Jenrry Mejia closed the door in the ninth for his 10th save of the season.

Chris Young homered in the win, while Ruben Tejada and Juan Lagares each knocked in a run.

Christian Yelich hit a solo home run for the Marlins, who have lost four of their last five. Marcell Ozuna, Donovan Solano and Garrett Jones each had an RBI in the setback.

Miami broke the scoreless tie in the third thanks to Mets third baseman David Wright's 11th error of the season.

Adeiny Hechavarria led off the inning with a double to left and moved over to third on pitcher Tom Koehler's sacrifice bunt. Yelich walked to put runners at the corners before Solano ripped a grounder to third that was too much to handle for Wright.

New York starter Daisuke Matsuzaka did work out of the jam, however, by striking out Giancarlo Stanton and Casey McGehee.

With two outs in the top of the fifth, Yelich clubbed his eighth homer of the season to increase Miami's lead to 2-0.

New York answered with two runs in the home fifth to tie the game.

D'Arnaud singled up the middle to begin the rally, New York's first hit off Koehler. Nieuwenhuis then belted a double to the base of the wall in left to put both runners in scoring position.

Lagares grounded out to push a run across and Tejada followed with a well- executed suicide squeeze that allowed Nieuwenhuis to slide in safely.

Miami didn't let the game stay tied for long, scoring two runs in the sixth to retake the lead.

McGehee walked with one down in the frame and advanced to second on a passed ball by d'Arnaud. Jones drove McGehee in with a bloop double to left center and Ozuna made it 4-2 with a line-drive double to right.

Koehler's day came to an end after a one-out walk to Tejada in the seventh. Bryan Morris came on in relief and saw the first pitch he threw to a pinch- hitting Young deposited over the wall in left for a game-tying homer.

"I just have to keep attacking the hitters," said Koehler. "When I get ahead and throw strikes it's tough to score on."

Mets All-Star Daniel Murphy made a spectacular grab in the eighth to keep the game knotted at 4-4. With two on and two out in the inning, Hechavarria smoked a line drive to second, where Murphy leapt up and snagged the liner with full extension to end the inning.

Mejia had no problem setting down the Marlins in order in the ninth as the Mets downed their division rival for the fourth straight meeting.
