Giants start second half with rout of Marlins
Jul 19, 2014 - 5:18 AM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Pablo Sandoval and Brandon Crawford both went yard and drove in three runs to help the San Francisco Giants open the second half of the season with a 9-1 rout of the Miami Marlins. The Giants had 13 hits to back six strong innings from Madison Bumgarner (11-7), who allowed just a run on four hits with seven strikeouts.
"He was on top of his game. He threw very well," praised Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "The cushion that we had allowed me to give him a break. It couldn't have worked out better. The guys played well today."
Buster Posey and Michael Morse each had three hits and two runs scored for San Francisco, which was desperate for a good start after limping into the All- Star break with a major league-worst 10-22 mark since June 8.
Giancarlo Stanton homered for the Marlins, while starter Nathan Eovaldi (5-5) was roughed up for eight runs on nine hits over four-plus innings.
Miami has lost 12 of its last 17 games.
Crawford battled during his 11-pitch at-bat in the second inning, fouling off six pitches and working the count full before smacking a two-run shot to left with Morse aboard after doubling.
"The first inning was good and then after that, the Crawford at-bat I left one middle-in and he hit a home run," said Eovaldi. "After that it was just tough. I made some really good pitches and they got hit."
The Giants tacked on two more runs in the top of the third. Hunter Pence worked a one-out walk, moved to second on Joe Panik's groundout and scored on Posey's RBI liner up the middle. Sandoval advanced Posey with his base knock to center and Morse slapped one into left to make it 4-0.
Sandoval's three-run blast into the bullpen in right helped San Francisco pad its cushion in the fifth inning. Pence doubled to start the frame and Panik and Posey followed with singles to make it 5-0. Sandoval then chased Eovaldi from the contest with his 12th home run of the season.
Reliever Dan Jennings took over on the mound and yielded another run on Crawford's sacrifice fly, which came two batters after Morse greeted Jennings with a double to right.
Miami finally got one back when Stanton ended a 15-game homerless spell with his 22nd of the year in the home sixth.
Four relievers combined to hold the Marlins off the board, with Jean Machi closing the books on a 1-2-3 ninth.

Stanton improved to 8-for-13 lifetime against Bumgarner ... The Giants have won 18 of 26 road games in Miami ... San Francisco finished 6-for-11 with runners in scoring position while Miami went 0-for-3 with RISP.
