Teagarden's slam lifts Mets past Brewers

Jun 11, 2014 - 4:47 AM Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Taylor Teagarden smacked a grand slam to break the game open in the sixth inning and the New York Mets defeated the Milwaukee Brewers, 6-2, in the opener of a three-game set.

Teagarden made his Mets debut on Tuesday night after being called up from Triple-A Las Vegas Sunday to replace demoted catcher Travis d'Arnaud.

"If I can help get the monkey off the back," Teagarden said. "Whatever it takes."

Daisuke Matsuzaka (3-0) surrendered a run on three hits and three walks while striking out five over six frames for the Mets, who snapped a six-game losing streak. Daniel Murphy cracked a two-run homer in the victory.

"He throws a little of everything at you, keeps you off-balance. Which he did," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said of Matsuzaka.

Marco Estrada (5-3) yielded six runs on four hits and four walks over six innings for Milwaukee, which had won three of its last four games coming in.

The Mets had a 2-1 edge through five innings before breaking the game open in the sixth.

David Wright and Curtis Granderson worked a pair of one-out walks before Chris Young struck out. Lucas Duda then coaxed another free pass from Estrada and Teagarden followed by slicing his grand slam the opposite way, with the ball bouncing off the top of the wall and into the seats in right to make it 6-1.

Carlos Gomez's RBI double trimmed the Brewers' deficit to 6-2 in the eighth. With runners on second and third with one out, Jeurys Familia struck out both Aramis Ramirez and Khris Davis to end the threat, however.

Jenrry Mejia then fired a 1-2-3 ninth.

Earlier, after Milwaukee left a pair on base in the first and third innings, the Mets opened the scoring in the home third.

Ruben Tejada worked a two-out walk and Murphy lined his two-run homer, which landed just over the wall and into the netting in right field.

Lyle Overbay's one-out double in the fourth cut the gap to 2-1.

Game Notes

Both teams were 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position ... Murphy's blast was his fifth of the season ... Gomez has 36 RBI this year.
