Duda's ninth inning HR lifts Mets over Brewers
Jul 26, 2014 - 6:31 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Lucas Duda's two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning gave the New York Mets a 3-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday.Milwaukee carried a 2-0 lead into the ninth inning thanks to 7 2/3 scoreless innings by Yovani Gallardo, but closer Francisco Rodriguez (4-4) failed to record an out before the Mets went in front. Daniel Murphy doubled to left to start the frame and David Wright singled to make it 2-1. Duda followed with a no-doubter over the wall in right.
"They jumped me right away," said Rodriguez. "Everything was up and over the plate."
Jenrry Mejia struck out the side in the ninth to earn his 14th save.
Gallardo is now winless in his last six starts despite striking out eight and yielding just four hits during his stint.
Zack Wheeler also pitched well despite not factoring into the decision. The young righty fanned nine in 6 2/3 frame, surrendering two runs -- one earned -- on three hits.
"I feel for him tonight. That was plus stuff against an outstanding lineup," praised Mets manager Terry Collins. "Pretty dominating performance by Zack."
Murphy had three hits for the Mets, who have won three of four.
Carlos Gomez had two of Milwaukee's three hits, including a solo homer, as the Brewers' four-game win streak came to an end. Aramis Ramirez was credited with the other RBI.
Rickie Weeks drew a walk to start the home sixth and moved to third when Ryan Braun's grounder trickled under Murphy's glove at second base and into right. Ramirez then worked the count full before grounding softly to shortstop, plating Weeks on a fielder's choice. Ramirez beat out the throw to first and Lyle Overbay walked with two outs, but Jean Segura's innocent grounder ended the threat with the Brewers up just 1-0.
Gomez then made it 2-0 with his two-out home run a half inning later, and Weeks followed with a bullet liner off the wall in right-center for a double, chasing Wheeler from the game. Vic Black came on and got Braun to fly to right to end the seventh.
Carlos Torres (5-4) tossed a scoreless eighth inning for the Mets.
Game Notes
Milwaukee second baseman Scooter Gennett missed his third straight game with tightness in his quad ... The Brewers went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine.
