Brewers' Peralta notches 14th win
Aug 8, 2014 - 1:55 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Wily Peralta struck out nine batters in 6 2/3 strong innings to become the first pitcher to reach 14 wins this season, as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the San Francisco Giants, 3-1, in the rubber match of a three-game set.Peralta (14-6) scattered seven hits and allowed just one run in his fifth straight winning start. He has not lost since July 8 against the Phillies.
"I have a lot of confidence in Wily (Peralta)," said Brewers manager Ron Roenicke. "He doesn't seem to lose his stuff when he gets to a point where most guys do. I looked up there one time and I saw his 98th pitch and it was 98 miles per hour."
Ryan Braun and Khris Davis both had RBI doubles for the Brewers, who have won eight of their last 11 home games since losing six in a row at Miller Park from July 7-12.
Jake Peavy (0-3) was solid for the Giants, but only received one run of support. He let in just three runs over 5 2/3 innings, but gave up nine hits and walked three in his 12th consecutive losing decision. The former Cy Young award winner is winless in his last 18 starts with Boston and San Francisco.
"I can't give any more than I'm giving," said Peavy. "You just over analyze everything when you're in those tight ball games and obviously that's what I've pitched in so far."
Hunter Pence knocked in the lone run for the Giants, who haven't won a series against a team with a winning record since taking three of four games against St. Louis from May 29-June 1.
The Giants loaded the bases in the top of the first, but it was the Brewers who scored in the home half of the inning. Jonathan Lucroy lined a single to center that was followed by Braun's double that sent him home.
The Giants tied it up with a run in the fifth. Peavy struck out swinging, but Peralta's pitch got away from Lucroy behind the plate and the Giants' pitcher reached first on the wild pitch. Angel Pagan singled before Pence punched one up the middle, scoring Peavy with an RBI single.
Milwaukee reclaimed the lead for good in the sixth. After Aramis Ramirez hit a leadoff double to center, Davis hit a line drive down the line in right for an RBI ground-rule double, due to a fan picking up the ball while it was still in play.
After Rickie Weeks put runners on the corners with a single, Mark Reynolds hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Davis and put the Brewers up 3-1.
A Pablo Sandoval walk preceded a single by Joe Panik, putting runners on first and second for San Francisco with two away in the eighth. However, Brandon Crawford struck out to end the Giants' best chance at a comeback.
Francisco Rodriguez notched his 34th save of the season with a perfect ninth inning.
Game Notes
Peavy's only win of the season came on April 25 when he was with the Red Sox. His record overall is 1-12 ... Braun now has 66 RBI on the season ... Prior to the game, the Giants activated Pagan from the 15-day disabled list and optioned infielder Matt Duffy to Triple-A Fresno. Pagan started in center field and went 2-for-5 with two singles ... The Giants head to Kansas City to start a three-game series with the Royals on Friday ... The Brewers finish their current six-game homestand with a three-match set against the Dodgers that begins Friday.
