Final
Almonte, Padres top Brewers
Aug 27, 2014 - 5:32 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Abraham Almonte went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI to lead the San Diego Padres past the first-place Milwaukee Brewers, 4-1, on Tuesday.Tyson Ross (12-12) allowed just one run on four hits over 6 1/3 innings a day after watching Milwaukee put up 10 runs in the opener of this three-game set.
The only run the Brewers mustered came on Scooter Gennett's ground-rule double in the fourth, as the NL Central leaders were limited to two hits the rest of the way.
Almonte cleared the right-field wall with a solo blast in the first frame, then looped a base hit into right field for an RBI single two innings later.
"He's been swinging the bat well," Padres manager Bud Black said of Almonte.
Jean Segura's error extended the third, and an RBI single by Yasmani Grandal and a run-scoring groundout by Jedd Gyorko gave the Padres a 4-0 lead.
Jimmy Nelson (2-5) was charged with all four runs, though only two were earned. He struck out seven over five innings.
"He just struggled off and on with his fastball and his slider," said Brewers manager Ron Roenicke. "Made some good pitches with both of them. But every pitch you didn't know if he was going to be around the zone or not."
The combination of Nick Vincent, Kevin Quackenbush and Joaquin Benoit tossed 2 2/3 one-hit innings behind Ross to close out the win.
Benoit was credited with his ninth save.
Game Notes
Ross has recorded 13 consecutive quality starts, pitching to a 1.96 ERA in that span ... Segura had two of Milwaukee's five hits.
