Brewers force extras, beat Cardinals in 12th
Sep 17, 2014 - 5:50 AM St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Hector Gomez scored the game-tying run in the ninth, then knocked in the winning run in the 12th to lift the Milwaukee Brewers over the NL Central-leading St. Louis Cardinals, 3-2, on Tuesday.The Cardinals sent Kevin Siegrist (1-4) to the mound in the 12th. Carlos Gomez walked and swiped two bases before scoring on Hector Gomez's bloop single to shallow right field.
"We deserved a bloop," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "I'll take it."
Brandon Kintzler (3-3) got the last out in the 11th and Francisco Rodriguez tossed a scoreless 12th for his 42nd save. Wily Peralta got the start and gave up two runs on five hits over seven innings for the Brewers, who have won five of six and are four games back of St. Louis in the division.
St. Louis starter Lance Lynn allowed one run on five hits over seven innings.
"I didn't have the best command, but I had enough to get through seven," Lynn said.
Holding a 2-1 lead, the Cardinals sent Trevor Rosenthal to the mound in the ninth. Jonathan Lucroy walked and was replaced on the basepaths by Hector Gomez. Aramis Ramirez doubled and Gerardo Parra was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out. Matt Clark hit a fly ball to left and Hector Gomez beat the throw home to tie the game.
Earlier, the Cardinals jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first.
Matt Carpenter, Jon Jay and Matt Holliday hit three straight singles to fill the bags. Matt Adams followed with a walk to force in a run, and the second scored when Jhonny Peralta grounded into a double play.
The Brewers got within one on Gerardo Parra's solo homer in the fourth.
Game Notes
The Cardinals fell to 10-7 against the Brewers this season ... St. Louis, which had a three-game winning streak snapped, leads the Pirates by 2 1/2 games for first place in the NL Central ... Rosenthal suffered his sixth blown save of the season.
