Twins take down Padres in interleague action
May 21, 2014 - 6:25 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Parmelee and Kurt Suzuki each hit solo homers to help the Minnesota Twins beat the San Diego Padres 5-3 in the first of two meetings at Petco Park.Trevor Plouffe had two hits and knocked in a run for the Twins, who have won six of their last eight games and seven straight against the Padres.
Minnesota starter Kevin Correia (2-5) was perfect through four innings, but he had a hiccup in the fifth, allowing three runs on four hits. The right-hander completed his outing by pitching around a one-out walk in the sixth.
Jedd Gyorko finished 2-for-4 with an RBI for San Diego, which has dropped two straight and four of its last six games. Ian Kennedy (2-6) gave up four runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings and threw two costly wild pitches.
The Padres opened the fifth with three consecutive hits, including an RBI single by Gyorko. Yasmani Grandal tied the game at 2-2 with a sacrifice fly and Kennedy drove in the go-ahead run with a single.
Kennedy, however, surrendered the tying run on a wild pitch in the sixth and uncorked another one in the seventh that allowed Eduardo Escobar to advance to third base. Escobar then scored on a Josmil Pinto sacrifice fly to give Minnesota the lead.
"When you're trying to throw breaking balls down, at times if you get through them a little bit too much and you're a little aggressive with them, you have a chance to bounce them," Padres manager Bud Black said.
The Twins tacked on another run in the eighth. Suzuki hit a liner to left field that went over the wall and landed back on the field. The San Diego outfielders reacted as though it was a home run, but there was no signal from the umpires and Suzuki circled the bases.
"Well as long as we get the run, I didn't care," Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire said. "I think the ball was in the seats, but he kept running so credit to him."
Glen Perkins wrapped up a solid effort by the Twins bullpen with a 1-2-3 ninth for his 13th save.
Parmelee opened the scoring with a leadoff blast to center in the second.
Three straight singles by Brian Dozier, Joe Mauer and Plouffe produced a second run in the third.
