Rangers edge Twins, snap eight-game skid

Jun 28, 2014 - 6:14 AM Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Nick Tepesch tossed 7 1/3 scoreless innings and the Texas Rangers survived a ninth-inning rally from the Minnesota Twins to win 5-4, ending their eight-game losing streak in the opener of a three-game set on Friday.

Tepesch (3-3) allowed just three hits and a pair of walks while fanning five to pick up his first win since May 26.

"We needed a well pitched game and he gave it to us," Rangers manager Ron Washington said of Tepesch.

Adrian Beltre crushed a two-run shot and Shin-Soo Choo went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Rangers, who snapped their longest skid since Aug. 8-16, 2005.

Kevin Correia (4-9) yielded four runs on six hits and two walks over six innings to absorb the loss.

Oswaldo Arcia and Eduardo Escobar each drove in a run for the Twins, who have lost four straight and nine consecutive road games.

"I'm proud of the guys for sticking in there, it was a rough night," Twins catcher Joe Mauer said.

The Twins managed just three hits in the first eight frames until a ninth- inning rally fell just short.

Joakim Soria walked Josh Willingham and gave up a Kendrys Morales double to start the inning. Arcia's base hit up the middle scored the Twins first run. Morales came home when an Escobar grounder went under the glove of Luis Sardinas at third.

Jorge Polanco's two-run triple to right pulled Minnesota within one. Soria then fanned Brian Dozier and got Kurt Suzuki to ground out to end the rally.

Beltre smashed a high fastball for a two-run homer to right-center field to open the scoring in the first. Choo singled to lead off.

Tepesch struck out Escobar looking with the bases loaded in the fourth to keep the Twins off the board.

In the fifth, Chris Gimenez worked a one-out walk and Sardinas' line-drive double went past a diving Willingham in left to score Gimenez. Choo doubled off the wall in left to make it 4-0.

The Rangers added a run in the eighth with a Beltre sacrifice fly that plated Elvis Andrus.

Game Notes

Soria's 8 1/3 scoreless innings streak came to an end ... Andrus extended his errorless streak to 30 games ... Minnesota finished 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position ... Texas went 2-for-5 with RISP.
