Darvish, Rangers blank Twins

Jun 29, 2014 - 3:47 AM Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Yu Darvish spun eight strong innings and Leonys Martin hit a two-run double in a 5-0 win for Texas over Minnesota in the second of a three-game set.

Darvish (8-4) snapped a two-game skid as he allowed just four hits and a walk with 10 strikeouts for the Rangers, who have taken the first two of this set after dropping eight consecutive games. Adrian Beltre was 3-for-3 with two runs scored.

"We got some runs with two outs and we're able to get some production," said Texas manager Ron Washington. "Yu did what he was supposed to do and the defense was there when we needed it."

Phil Hughes (8-4) allowed five runs on 11 hits over 7 2/3 innings for the Twins, who have dropped five straight. Chris Parmelee had two of the four hits in the loss.

"Surrendering a run early there sealed our fate," said Hughes. "With their guy going the way he was going, we knew we were going to have to be pretty good and giving up one run, let alone, five wasn't going to help."

Texas got on the board in the first inning on Chris Gimenez's run-scoring double. Beltre led off with a single, but was still sitting there after Donnie Murphy and Martin struck out.

Gimenez blasted a pitch to center that Sam Fuld fielded and got to Pedro Florimon with Beltre rounding third. Florimon's throw, though, was way off target and Beltre crossed the plate for a 1-0 lead.

In the third, Rougned Odor led off with a single, stole second and moved to third on a groundout from Shin-Soo Choo. Elvis Andrus then grounded out and Odor crossed the plate for a 2-0 lead.

Texas put the game away in the eighth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Luis Sardinas laid down a suicide squeeze and Martin followed with a double to right that chased home two more for a 5-0 advantage.

After stranding men on second and third in the second inning, the Twins managed just two more baserunners the entire game.
