Vargas powers Twins past Padres

Aug 6, 2014 - 6:59 AM Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - Kennys Vargas hit his first career home run, a three-run shot in the sixth inning, to give the Minnesota Twins a 3-1 victory over the San Diego Padres on Tuesday.

Brian Dozier finished 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Twins, who have won nine straight games against the Padres, dating back to June 24, 2008.

Phil Hughes (11-8) earned his first win in his last four starts after surrendering just one run on seven hits with nine strikeouts across six innings.

"I felt like my pitches were good," said Hughes. "I feel like for the most part I put the ball right where I wanted to."

Yonder Alonso homered among his three hits, while Everth Cabrera, Yangervis Solarte and Will Venable each supplied two hits for San Diego, which had its three-game winning streak come to an end.

Jesse Hahn (7-3), who entered the game with three straight winning decisions, was reached for three runs on four hits and four walks over 5 2/3 frames.

"He's done great work for a rookie pitcher that, coming into Spring Training, wasn't as high on the radar as other players," Padres manager Bud Black said.

Dozier doubled to left with one out in the sixth and was followed by a Trevor Plouffe walk. After Josh Willingham struck out, Vargas crushed a curveball to right field, making it a 3-1 game.

Glen Perkins worked around two hits in the ninth for his 28th save of the season.

The Padres almost scored in the second. Yasmani Grandal singled and rounded third on Alonso's double to right. Oswaldo Arcia played the ball off the wall to the cutoff man Dozier. The second baseman relayed the ball to catcher Kurt Suzuki, who made a diving tag on a sliding Grandal to end the frame.

Alonso got the Padres on the board after crushing a fastball into the second deck in right-center field to open the fifth.

Game Notes

The Twins are 12-3 all-time against the Padres ... Minnesota's most recent winning streak of nine games against a single opponent came against the White Sox from Sept. 14, 2010-July 8, 2011 ... San Diego finished 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base.
