Crisp leads A's past Twins
Aug 9, 2014 - 6:28 AM Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Coco Crisp hit a three-run triple and the Oakland Athletics held off the Minnesota Twins for a 6-5 victory in the second tilt of a four-game set on Friday.Eric Sogard had a two-run double and Stephen Vogt scored twice for Oakland, which has won 11 straight games against Minnesota.
Scott Kazmir (13-4) earned the win despite allowing five runs with four strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings of work.
Chris Parmelee hit a two-run double and Kennys Vargas finished 2-for-4 for the Twins, who have dropped three straight.
Kyle Gibson (10-9) gave up six runs -- five earned -- on five hits and five walks over five-plus frames in defeat.
Oakland went ahead 4-0 in the fifth. Vogt got aboard with a leadoff walk, moved to second on Sam Fuld's bunt single and advanced to third on first baseman Parmelee's throwing error. Sogard walked to load the bases.
Crisp ripped a bases-clearing triple to deep center to get the A's on the board. Crisp later scored on catcher Kurt Suzuki's passed ball for a 4-0 lead.
"Fortunately I was able to find a gap and knock a few runs in," Crisp said.
The A's tacked on two more runs in the sixth. Josh Reddick started the frame with a walk and Vogt singled. Anthony Swarzek took the mound and both runners moved up on Fuld's groundout. Sogard's liner to right landed for a two-run double.
Minnesota countered with five runs in the seventh. Danny Santana singled and Brian Dozier walked before Trevor Plouffe and Oswaldo Arcia hit RBI singles around a Vargas strikeout. Two batters later, Parmelee's liner rolled down the left-field line and bounced off the glove of Brandon Moss, scoring two runs and ending Kazmir's outing.
Eduardo Nunez greeted Ryan Cook with an RBI double to center, making it a 6-5 game.
Luke Gregerson spun a perfect eighth and Sean Doolittle struck out two in the ninth to earn his 18th save of the season, which is a new franchise record for saves in a season by a left-handed pitcher.
