Mets rally in 9th, beat Phillies in 11th

May 11, 2014 - 10:07 PM Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Ruben Tejada's walk-off hit in the 11th inning scored Chris Young and lifted the New York Mets to a 5-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday to salvage a three-game series.

The Mets, their rallies stunted all day by Cole Hamels, were three outs away from being swept before they tied the game with three runs in the ninth inning against the Phillies bullpen.

Their winning rally started when Chris Young beat out a grounder to second baseman Chase Utley, who scooped the ball to first with his glove but not in time.

Young moved up on Zack Wheeler's bunt before Jeff Manship (1-1) intentionally walked Juan Lagares. Anthony Recher followed with a single to load the bases before Tejada's hit to center field won it.

Hamels threw a career-high 133 pitches in seven hardscrabble innings for the Phillies but the bullpen blew the left-hander's bid for a 100th career win.

The Mets -- who were swept in Miami before this series -- snapped a five-game losing streak heading into their four-game home-and-home matchup against the Yankees.

They went 7-for-37 with runners in scoring position against the Phillies and left 40 men on base. The Phillies stranded 38 in the series.

Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon saved the first two games of the series on just 21 pitches but wasn't available for the finale because of a neck problem.

Instead, Eric Young Jr. led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a double off Antonio Bastardo and Daniel Murphy followed by knocking a 3-1 fastball over the right-field wall for a two-run homer.

Bastardo fanned David Wright but gave up a double to Chris Young and Bobby Abreu's pinch-hit single off Roberto Hernandez went off Utley's glove at second. The tying run scored on Lagares' soft ground out.

Scott Rice (1-1) got one out with two runners on in the top of the 11th to pick up the win.

Hamels, who has long struggled against the Mets, gave up a run before getting an out but consistently pitched out of jams, striking out 10. He allowed seven hits and three walks but remains winless in four starts this season.

The Phillies scored three of their runs in the first four innings off Mets lefty Jon Niese, who pitched six.

The first three Mets batters of the game reached base against Hamels and they took a 1-0 lead on Wright's RBI single.

But the Phillies had four doubles in the first four innings against Niese to take the lead.

Cody Asche sliced the third one down the left-field line to knock in a run in the third inning and Marlon Byrd doubled and scored in a two-run fourth that gave the Phillies a 3-1 lead. Ryan Howard scored the first run in the fourth inning when he slid around a tag at home plate on Domonic Brown's grounder to first.

Hamels worked out of trouble in the sixth, fanning Curtis Granderson to end the inning with runners on second and third base. In the seventh, he gave up a double to Murphy but struck out Wright and got Chris Young on a fly ball to end the inning.

Jimmy Rollins drew a two-out walk off Jose Valverde in the ninth inning and scored on Utley's triple off the top of the wall in right-center field for a 4-1 Phillies lead.

Game Notes

Hamels' previous career-high was 128 pitches in 7 2/3 innings against San Francisco on July 21, 2012. He entered the game with a 7-14 record and 4.65 ERA in 27 prior starts against the Mets, including a rain-soaked loss on April 29 in Philadelphia, when he was charged with six runs, eight hits and five walks in 4 2/3 chilly innings ... The Phillies will host the Angels for two games starting Tuesday.
