Tanaka spins first shutout as Yanks blank Mets
May 15, 2014 - 5:53 AM Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - It was a night of firsts for Masahiro Tanaka.Tanaka got his first career hit in the top of the ninth, then completed his first shutout in the majors as the New York Yankees beat the New York Mets, 4-0, on Wednesday at Citi Field.
The Mets, who pounded out 21 runs over two games earlier this week at Yankee Stadium, were dominated by Tanaka (6-0). The right-hander allowed just four hits while striking out eight.
"I thought Tanaka was really good again and I thought he got better as the night went on," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of his starter. "To be able to give us what he gave us today was great."
Dating back to his time in Nippon Professional Baseball, the Japanese hurler is unbeaten in his past 42 regular-season starts, going 34-0 since Aug. 19, 2012.
Tanaka is only the second Yankee to throw a shutout against the Mets, joining Andy Pettitte who threw one at home back in 2002. He also became the first Yankees rookie to throw a shutout since Orlando Hernandez on Sept. 14, 1998, against Boston.
Yangervis Solarte and Mark Teixeira hit solo homers for the Yankees, who had lost six straight against the Mets. Brian Roberts and Derek Jeter each had an RBI.
Rafael Montero (0-1) gave up three runs on five hits over six innings in his MLB debut. The right-hander went 4-1 with a 3.67 ERA in eight starts with Triple-A Las Vegas this year.
"I thought he threw the ball well, gave us six innings," Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy said of Montero. "I thought he did a great job. I'm excited about what he's got going forward."
The Yankees gave Tanaka all the support he would need in the second. Solarte worked a two-out walk and raced home on Roberts' triple to left.
Solarte and Teixeira homered in the fourth and sixth, respectively, to make it a 3-0 contest.
The Yankees tacked on another run in the seventh. With Carlos Torres on the mound, Brett Gardner legged out an infield single, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Jeter's infield single.
Game Notes
Tanaka is the first Yankees rookie to begin his career 6-0 as a starter since Whitey Ford went 9-0 over 12 starts in 1950 ... The Mets placed starting pitcher Dillon Gee on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday.
