Ramos' big day lifts Nats past Mets

May 18, 2014 - 11:44 PM Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Wilson Ramos went 2-for-3 with four RBI as the Washington Nationals defeated the New York Mets, 6-3, on Sunday in the rubber match of a three-game set.

Ramos made a winner out of Jordan Zimmermann (3-1), who pitched six innings and surrendered three runs on eight hits. Rafael Soriano came on to pitch the ninth and nailed down his 10th save of the season.

"(Ramos) has been huge," said Zimmermann. "He is the guy that can hit a home run anytime he steps up there and as we saw today, big clutch hit and drove in some runs so it's definitely good to have him back."

Ian Desmond homered and Kevin Frandsen added the other RBI for Washington, which has won three of four.

Juan Centeno added two RBI for the Mets, who snapped a nine-game losing streak to Washington with its win on Saturday.

Mets starter Zack Wheeler (1-4) took the loss after allowing five runs -- three earned -- on six hits with five strikeouts over six innings.

"We know when you're facing this staff in particular to be able to bust the game open is few and far between," said New York third baseman David Wright. "You're going to have to chip away, but it seemed like we couldn't go out and throw zeros on the board after we would score."

Lucas Duda doubled to lead off the second and Centeno singled him home with two outs to open the scoring.

Desmond responded in the home half with a leadoff blast to left-center.

With two outs in the third, the Nats broke the tie after a two-run double by Ramos.

Anthony Rendon reached on a slow roller to third and Jayson Werth made it to first after an error by Ruben Tejada at shortstop.

Ramos then split the gap in left-center with a double that plated Rendon and Werth.

Washington added to its cushion with another pair of runs in the fifth, and again it was Ramos who did the damage. The Nats loaded the bases with no outs before Werth popped out to shallow center.

Ramos then followed with a single to left that plated Zimmermann, who opened the inning with a single, and Denard Span.

New York cut the deficit in half in the sixth after a run-scoring bloop single from Juan Lagares and an RBI single by Centeno. The Mets ran themselves out of the inning, however, after Centeno was nabbed at second trying to move up on his hit.

Washington added an insurance run in the eighth off Daisuke Matsuzaka. Ramos walked to lead off the frame, then Desmond slapped a single into right that enabled Ramos to move over to third.

Tyler Moore lined out to third in the next at-bat before Frandsen pushed Ramos across with a groundout to account for the final margin.

Game Notes

Prior to the game, Washington placed starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez on the 15- day disabled list with left shoulder inflammation. The club recalled Ryan Mattheus from Triple-A Syracuse ... Each team went 3-for-9 with runners in scoring position and stranded five men on base.
