Hamels shines as Phillies blank Mets
Jul 30, 2014 - 5:25 AM Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Cole Hamels pitched eight strong innings as the Philadelphia Phillies grabbed a 6-0 win over the New York Mets in the second of a three-game set.Hamels (6-5) allowed just six hits without a walk, striking out eight to win his third straight start.
Chase Utley hit a grand slam, while Jimmy Rollins and Grady Sizemore each added a solo home run for the Phillies, who have won four of their last six.
Dillon Gee (4-4) was tagged for five runs on five hits and three walks over 6 2/3 innings for the Mets, who had won five of seven coming in.
"His curveball was real good tonight and his changeup was there when he needed it," said New Yorm manager Terry Collins about Gee.
The Phillies first home run came in the third when Rollins hit one off the top of the fence in right field for a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth, Sizemore lined a pitch off the foul pole in right field for his first home run as a Phillie and a 2-0 advantage.
The seventh saw Domonic Brown single and, with two outs, Ben Revere get hit by a pitch. Rollins then walked to load the bases for Utley, who crushed a pitch over the right field wall for his ninth home run of the season.
"Looking back it obviously wasn't necessary, but it's always good to add on when you have a small lead, especially late in the game," said Utley.
Hamels allowed a two-out double by David Wright in the third inning, but he then struck out Eric Campbell.
The final out of the fourth inning started a run by Hamels that saw him retired the final 13 batters he faced.
