A's use early offense to overcome Yankees
Jun 16, 2014 - 4:16 AM Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Derek Norris collected three hits, including a three-run homer, as Oakland poured it on early and topped New York, 10-5, in the rubber match of a three-game series.Coco Crisp also hit a three-run shot and scored three times for the Athletics, who won the final two games in the set and recovered from dropping two of three on the road against the Angels during the week.
Yoenis Cespedes added two hits and drove in a pair, Kyle Blanks hit safely twice and crossed home twice for Oakland, which hit double digits for the 12th time in 2014 and matched a season high by going 15 games over .500 at 42-27.
Jesse Chavez (6-4) allowed a run on five hits while striking out four over six solid innings.
Carlos Beltran and Brett Gardner homered, while Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira knocked in a run each for the Yankees, who had lost two out of three at home to Oakland from June 3-5.
"Today was one of those games," Jeter said. "But I think for the most part we've been playing good as of late."
Vidal Nuno (1-3) was torched in the loss for eight hits and as many runs over three-plus frames.
Oakland rolled to victory thanks to scoring 10 times over the first four innings.
In the opening frame, Crisp and Craig Gentry singled to start and two batters later, a Norris blast cleared the wall in left.
Norris also hit a three-run shot on Mother's Day, prompting A's manager Bob Melvin to quip: "I guess he has a good relationship with his parents."
"Ever since I've been here we've been built around the long ball," Norris said. "Whenever we hit homers, we win."
Blanks and Nick Punto singled with one away in the second and Crisp brought them home with his three-run blast to make it 6-0.
In the fourth, Blanks singled, Punto walked and Jose Ramirez spelled Nuno only to walk Crisp, then plunked Gentry to force in a run. Cespedes followed with a two-run single, and Donaldson later snapped an 0-for-33 string with an RBI single for a 10-0 game.
Teixeira's double drove in Jeter in the sixth for New York's first run, then a Beltran solo blast and Jeter sacrifice fly made it 10-3 in the seventh.
Jim Johnson gave up a two-run shot from Gardner which officially halved the visitors' deficit, but Luke Gregerson fanned John Ryan Murphy to end the game.
Game Notes
Chavez has allowed two runs or fewer in 10 of his 14 starts this season ... Johnson has given up 13 runs -- 12 earned -- over his last 15 appearances ...
