Blue Jays top Yankees on Solarte's error
Jun 25, 2014 - 5:41 AM Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Jose Reyes scored on third baseman Yangervis Solarte's throwing error in the bottom of the ninth, lifting the Toronto Blue Jays over the New York Yankees, 7-6, in the second test of a three-game series.Reyes started the ninth with a double to right off Adam Warren (1-4). Melky Cabrera then put down a nice bunt. Solarte came charging in and made a wild throw to first, allowing the game-winning run to score.
Casey Janssen (2-0) tossed one scoreless inning to pick up the win for the Blue Jays, who won despite blowing a six-run lead. Mark Buehrle, who entered Tuesday's game with a dismal 1-11 career record against New York, gave up four runs on eight hits over 6 2/3 innings.
Dioner Navarro went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer for Toronto. Colby Rasmus knocked in two runs.
Derek Jeter and Brian Roberts homered for the Yankees, who saw starter David Phelps give up six runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts over five innings.
"That was an ugly game to watch, and if you're a fan, you should probably get your money back," said Yankees first baseman Mark Teixiera.
Toronto's offense gave Buehrle a 6-0 lead through five innings.
But it all started to fall apart in the sixth, when Jeter led off with a homer.
New York tacked on five more runs in the seventh to tie things up. Brian McCann hit a one-out double to left and scored on Roberts' homer to left. Brett Gardner followed with a double to shallow left field.
Dustin McGowan came in from the bullpen and immediately ran into trouble. Jeter walked before Jacoby Ellsbury's single to left-center field plated Gardner. The Yankees got two more runs when Teixeira reached base on Reyes' throwing error.
"I tried to make something happen after that mistake," said Reyes. "They tied the game there in that situation. I have to make a better throw than that. It is what it is. Like I said, when I came up in the ninth inning I just tried to make something happen.
"I put a good swing on the ball and hit a double with nobody out."
The crowd held its collective breath as first baseman Edwin Encarnacion fell to the ground on the play. Encarnacion was leaning backwards as he tried to field Reyes' throw when Teixeira's arm nailed the back of his head. Encarnacion was examined by the medical staff and remained in the game.
The Blue Jays had a great chance to break the 6-6 tie in the eighth. With the bases loaded and one out, pinch-hitter Anthony Gose grounded into a fielder's choice, second to catcher. Munenori Kawasaki struck out swinging to end the threat.
New York stranded a runner on third in the ninth. Janssen fanned Teixeira with Gardner on third.
Navarro's three-run homer in the fourth broke a scoreless tie. Adam Lind and Encarnacion hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. After Rasmus struck out swinging, Navarro smacked Phelps' 1-2 offering into the second deck in right.
The Blue Jays tacked on three more runs in the fifth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Rasmus hit a two-run single off the wall in right, and Encarnacion came home while Jeter chased Rasmus back to first in a botched rundown.
"I should have known that Tex was playing more over in the hole and that Reyes had a huge lead and I couldn't get him at second," said Jeter.
Game Notes
The Yankees fell to 5-3 against the Blue Jays this season ... Buehrle hasn't beaten New York since 2004 when he was a member of the Chicago White Sox ... Each team left seven men on base.
