McCarthy, Yankees down Rangers to win series
Jul 24, 2014 - 11:40 PM Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Brandon McCarthy pitched six strong innings for his second straight win and the New York Yankees beat the Texas Rangers 4-2 on Thursday to finish a four-game series. The Yankees won the last three games of the series -- Wednesday's outing was shortened to five innings because of rain -- and improved to 6-1 on their 10- game homestand.
McCarthy (2-0) struck out five and gave up one run on four hits and two walks. The Yankees have won all three of his starts since acquiring the right-hander from the Diamondbacks on July 6 for Vidal Nuno.
"They put up some long at-bats against him," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi. "But he just kept at it, kept throwing strikes. ... He just found a way to get through it."
J.P. Arencibia hit a solo homer for the Rangers, who have lost five of their last six and 27 of their last 32 games.
"We have good leadership, we have good players," said Arencibia. "You just wake up every morning and believe it's going to change."
Colby Lewis (6-8) took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits and three walks in 6 1/3 innings.
The Yankees took a 3-1 lead with a two-run fifth inning. Ichiro Suzuki drew a leadoff walk and scored on Francisco Cervelli's double to the left-field corner, and Cervelli later came home on Brett Gardner's sacrifice fly.
Arencibia drove his fourth homer of the season over the left-field wall to lead off the seventh inning against Adam Warren, who relieved McCarthy.
The Yankees got the run back and took a 4-2 lead in the eighth inning after Carlos Beltran led off with a single and scored on Brian McCann's double to the wall in left-center.
Rougned Odor's two-out single in the top of the third inning was the game's first hit and the first of three consecutive singles given up by McCarthy. He scored on Elvis Andrus' bloop hit to center to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead.
The Yankees didn't have a hit off Lewis until Gardner's leadoff double in the fourth. He came around on Chase Headley's single off the right-field wall to tie the score.
