Jeter, Yankees avoid sweep vs. Rays
Sep 18, 2014 - 5:30 AM St. Petersburg, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Derek Jeter broke out of a slump in his last game at Tropicana Field, scoring the eventual winning run as the New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 on Wednesday night.Jeter, who is retiring, snapped an 0-for-28 slump with a leadoff single in the sixth inning and scored on a sacrifice fly.
New York starter Brandon McCarthy (7-4) struck out the last three batters he faced on nine pitches and gave up two runs on four hits and a walk in seven innings.
"I think he's really good," said Rays manager Joe Maddon. "I know he had a tough time in Arizona (before he was traded) but I'd like to see those videos."
The Yankees snapped a three-game losing streak and avoided being swept in the three-game set after losing 1-0 and 6-1. They went 2-5 on a seven-game road trip.
Evan Longoria homered and drove in two runs for the Rays, who had a three-game winning streak ended. Alex Cobb (9-8) allowed three runs in six innings and remained winless in his last five starts.
"For some reason, the ball just kept sailing on me up and away," Cobb said.
New York didn't have a baserunner until Jacoby Ellsbury's leadoff single in the fourth. Longoria's two-out drive to straightaway center field in the bottom of the inning, his 22nd homer of the season, gave the Rays a 1-0 lead.
The Yankees took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on RBI doubles by Chase Headley and Brendan Ryan. They scored another run in the sixth but could have had more with the bases loaded.
Right fielder Wil Myers leaped to catch Brett Gardner's drive at the wall, allowing only Jeter to score.
David DeJesus tripled in the sixth and scored on Longoria's groundout to pull the Rays within 3-2.
After McCarthy had a so-called "immaculate inning" in the seventh, Dellin Betances worked around a leadoff walk in a scoreless eighth. David Robertson gave up a two-out single to Myers in the ninth but earned his 37th save.
