Rangers complete sweep of A's
Sep 18, 2014 - 11:01 PM Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Tomas Telis drove in two runs as the Texas Rangers completed a three-game sweep of the Oakland Athletics with a 7-2 victory on Thursday.Jake Smolinski finished with four hits, an RBI and a run scored, while Leonys Martin, Elvis Andrus and Ryan Rua each brought in a run for the Rangers, who extended their winning streak to a season-high six games.
Nick Martinez (4-11) earned his first win in close to a month after giving up just two runs on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings.
Sam Fuld hit a two-run triple for Oakland, which is now a half-game behind the idle Kansas City Royals for the top AL wild card spot.
Starter Sonny Gray (13-9) was knocked around, giving up five runs -- four earned -- on eight hits and two walks over five innings.
Gray ran into trouble early on with two outs in the first. Smolinski's liner to left with runners on the corners brought home Rougned Odor. Telis followed in similar fashion, Rua's single into center brought in a run and Telis scored on a wild pitch for a 4-0 score.
Oakland cut the deficit in half in the third. Derek Norris and Coco Crisp both walked before Fuld brought them both in with a two-out triple down the right- field line.
"It felt like we were back in the game when it was 4-2, but we couldn't get anything going after that," said A's manager Bob Melvin.
The Rangers tacked on a run in the fifth after Adrian Beltre came home when Telis grounded into a force out.
Dan Otero replaced Gray in the sixth and gave up a leadoff single to Adam Rosales, who came home two batters later on Martin's double to deep right. Andrus followed with an RBI single through the hole in left for a 7-2 lead.
The A's failed to capitalize in the home half, stranding runners at second and third.
Game Notes
Former Rangers manager Ron Washington held a press conference on Thursday and stated that marital infidelity led to his resignation earlier this month ... Gray is now 1-5 over his last nine starts ... Oakland was without first baseman Stephen Vogt (ankle) and outfielder Josh Reddick (neck, ankle) ... Texas leads the season series, 8-7 ... The A's were outhit, 15-6.
