Beltre lifts Rangers over Phillies in 9th
Apr 2, 2014 - 6:14 AM Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Adrian Beltre tied the game with a double in the seventh inning and won it with a single in the ninth.A day after 10 runs wasn't good enough on Opening Day, the Texas Rangers got their first win of the season by scoring two times against the Philadelphia bullpen.
Beltre's line-drive single scored Shin-Soo Choo with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning Tuesday night to give the Rangers a 3-2 walk-off win over the Phillies, who had beaten them 14-10 the day before.
A.J. Burnett, in his regular-season Phillies debut, left with a lead after six innings and Ryan Howard had an RBI double batting somewhere other than fourth in the order for the first time as a starter in almost six years.
But Beltre's tying two-out double off Jake Diekman in the seventh scored Choo, who later led off the ninth with a walk against Phillies lefty Mario Hollands.
Hollands (0-1), in his major league debut, also walked Prince Fielder with one out and Beltre stroked his game-winning hit to right field off B.J. Rosenberg.
"That's a lot of fun, getting to celebrate on the field like that," said Fielder, who had one of two big walks in the inning to set up Beltre's game- winning hit.
The finale of the three-game series is Wednesday night.
Howard was 1-for-4 with two strikeouts after he was dropped one spot in the order against Rangers left-handed starter Martin Perez.
It was the first time the left-handed slugger didn't bat cleanup as a starter since a three-game series against Texas in Arlington from June 27-29, 2008, when he hit behind Pat Burrell all three games.
Perez was pulled after Howard stroked the lefty's 92 mph fastball to the right-field wall to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead. The Rangers' 2013 Rookie of the Year struck out seven without a walk and gave up seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. Joakim Soria (1-0) pitched a perfect ninth for the win.
Burnett, who signed a one-year, $16 million deal in the offseason, struck out three, walked two and gave up one run and seven hits.
Cesar Hernandez was the first Phillies runner to reach second base when he doubled to lead off the sixth inning. Jimmy Rollins, who homered in Monday's opener, drove him in with a single up the middle for the game's first run.
Another run might have scored in the inning but Perez picked off Ben Revere at second base in a play that was reviewed and overturned after Revere was originally ruled safe.
"The ball was just coming at my body as I was going back to the bag," Revere said. "It was like a millimeter away. The ball hit me in my back [when it hit the glove], and I thought I had my hand in there. I was ready for it, but the ball was tailing and the guy reached and I kind of slid into it. Just one of those things, bang-bang. Even the umpire said, 'I thought you had a hand in there.' I said, 'I did, too.'"
Alex Rios doubled to lead off the bottom of the sixth and scored on Mitch Moreland's single for Texas' first run. Moreland was doubled off first base after Marlon Byrd made a diving catch on Donnie Murphy's fly ball to shallow right field.
Game Notes
The Rangers improved to 4-7 all-time against the Phillies ... In that three- game series against Texas in 2008, Howard went 3-for-11 with a two-run homer, three RBI, two walks and five strikeouts ... Phillies right-hander Kyle Kendrick and Rangers lefty Robbie Ross Jr. will pitch in the series finale Wednesday night ... The Rangers said ace right-hander Yu Darvish felt strong and didn't experience any physical issues during an 86-pitch bullpen session on Tuesday. Darvish was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with neck stiffness but the move was retroactive to March 21, so he could be available by the weekend.
