Rivera's career night carries Padres past Giants

Apr 29, 2014 - 6:18 AM San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Rene Rivera homered, doubled and drove in a career-best five runs to guide the San Diego Padres to a 6-4 triumph over the San Francisco Giants in the opener of a three-game set from AT&T Park.

Tommy Medica and Alexi Amarista each scored twice for San Diego, which snapped a brief two-game losing skid. Tyson Ross (3-3) earned the win despite allowing four runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 rocky innings and Huston Street pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to secure his 10th save of the season.

Rivera, who hadn't homered since May 19, 2011, while playing for Minnesota, collected his first five RBI of the season.

"We needed a game like that from one of our guys," Padres manager Bud Black said of Rivera. "That was a hard fought game on both sides. Again, great game from (Rivera)."

Madison Bumgarner (2-3) yielded five runs -- four earned -- in five innings for San Francisco to absorb his third straight loss. Brandon Hicks went yard in the setback and Michael Morse finished 3-for-4 with two RBI.

"He's made a few more mistakes than we're accustomed to," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of his starting pitcher. "He did a good job getting ahead tonight, just left some balls out over the plate. (He) made a few more mistakes than he normally does."

The Padres put two across to open the scoring in the top of the fourth, but Bumgarner avoided the big inning despite allowing two doubles coupled by a pair of errors. Medica started the frame by reaching on Brandon Crawford's error, Amarista doubled to deep left and Rivera plated both runners with a two-bagger down the left-field line.

After Jace Peterson's grounder advanced Rivera to third, Ross reached on Pablo Sandoval's miscue at third. Cameron Maybin walked to load the bags, but strikeouts to Everth Cabrera and Chris Denorfia got Bumgarner out of the jam.

The Giants took the lead in the home half. Angel Pagan singled and scored on Hunter Pence's triple to the gap in left-center field. Brandon Belt then walked, took second on Ross' wild pitch and Morse made it 3-2 with a two-run single to center.

Rivera helped San Diego reclaim the lead a half inning later with one swing of the bat. Medica singled and Amarista walked with one away to set the stage for Rivera, whose pop to center carried out into the stands to make it 5-3.

San Francisco got one back in the bottom of the fifth on Hicks' solo shot, but San Diego put an insurance run across in the top of the ninth to provide Street a two-run cushion. Will Venable doubled to start the frame, moved to third on Nick Hundley's groundout and scored when Amarista grounded to second. Hicks went home with the throw, but it was wide of the target and Venable slid in safely.

Game Notes

Peterson had the first two-hit game of his young career. He improved to 3- for-10 at the dish in his rookie season ... The Padres hit just 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position, leaving 10 men on base, while the Giants finished 2-for-5 and stranded five ... Both teams had nine hits.
