Crawford, Giants edge Padres

Sep 27, 2014 - 11:33 PM San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Brandon Crawford's two-run single in the bottom of the eighth lifted the San Francisco Giants over the San Diego Padres, 3-1, in the third contest of a four-game series.

The Padres sent Dale Thayer (4-5) to the mound in the eighth. Matt Duffy reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on Cory Spangenberg's throwing error. Brandon Belt and Andrew Susac walked to load the bases. After pinch-hitter Pablo Sandoval struck out swinging, Crawford hit a two-run single to right.

Hunter Strickland (1-0) retired the side in the top of the eighth for the Giants, who are locked into the second wild card spot in the National League. Santiago Casilla tossed a scoreless ninth for his 19th save of the season.

Giants outfielder Hunter Pence wasn't in Saturday's starting lineup, ending his major league-leading streak of 331 consecutive starts. A pinch-hitting appearance in the seventh inning kept alive his MLB-best streak of 382 games in a row.

Jake Peavy got the start for San Francisco and allowed one run on four hits with three walks over five innings against his former team. San Diego starter Eric Stults gave up one run on six hits over seven innings.

The Giants jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first. Duffy reached on an infield single and raced home on Belt's double to right.

The Padres tied the game in the fifth after Will Venable led off with a single, advanced to third on Spangenberg's double and scored on Yasmani Grandal's sacrifice fly.

San Diego left a runner on third in the seventh. Spangenberg singled before stealing second and third, but Seth Smith grounded out to end the threat.
