Bumgarner, Giants down Cardinals

May 31, 2014 - 4:57 AM St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Madison Bumgarner fired seven scoreless innings and the San Francisco Giants defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 9-4, in the second test of a four-game set.

Bumgarner (7-3) struck out 10 and scattered three hits for the Giants, who have won eight of their last nine games.

Hunter Pence smacked a three-run homer and Michael Morse added an RBI single among his two hits to go with a run scored in the triumph.

Adam Wainwright (8-3) was shelled for seven runs on eight hits and a walk over 4 1/3 innings in his worst start of the season for St. Louis, which has dropped four of its last five contests.

"The way he's been throwing you don't expect to score a lot of runs like that," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of Wainwright.

The Giants jumped out to their 7-0 lead after plating a run in the first, four in the second, two in the fifth and two more in the seventh.

Angel Pagan led off the game with a double and scored three batters later when Morse singled into right-center.

All four of San Francisco's runs in the second came with two outs. Brandon Hicks walked and Bumgarner singled to put runners on the corners before Pagan singled home Hicks. Pence then belted a three-run shot deep into the seats in left to give the Giants a 5-0 lead.

Pablo Sandoval hit a one-out single in the fifth and Morse followed with a double into right-center to put runners on second and third. Seth Maness came on to replace Wainwright and induced a groundout from Hector Sanchez, but Gregor Blanco stepped up next and slapped a two-run single into right-center, plating Sandoval and Morse for San Francisco's 7-0 cushion.

Sanchez's two-run single in the seventh made it 9-0, while Jon Jay's three-run double in the eighth finally got St. Louis on the board. Allen Craig followed with a run-scoring double off Juan Gutierrez.

"It got pretty far away from us but you're still seeing guys grind out the at- bats," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said.
