Seager leads Mariners comeback over Rangers
Apr 28, 2014 - 2:46 AM Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Kyle Seager's second home run of the game -- a three-run shot to right in the eighth inning -- helped the Seattle Mariners rally to a 6-5 win over the Texas Rangers to take the rubber match of this three-game set from Safeco Field.Seattle trailed 5-0 through four innings but scored one run each in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings before Seager's three-run blast off Alexi Ogando (1-2) completed the comeback.
Ogando struck out the first two batters he faced in the frame before Justin Smoak started the rally with a double to left. Pinch-hitter Dustin Ackley then reached on an infield single to set up Seager's heroics.
"He's starting to swing the bat the way we know he's capable of swinging," Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said about Seager.
Danny Farquhar (1-0) tossed a scoreless top of the eighth for Seattle and Fernando Rodney had a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his fifth save of the season.
The Rangers scored twice in the second inning to open the scoring. Adrian Beltre doubled to start the stanza and moved to third on Alex Rios' single. Mitch Moreland followed with an RBI single to right, plating Beltre. Rios also scored on the play after Stefen Romero's error.
Texas' fourth-inning rally put three more runs across and chased Seattle starter Brandon Maurer from the game. Rios reached on an infield single, Moreland doubled and Leonys Martin drove both runners in with a single to center.
Martin scored two batters later on Michael Choice's double to left. Lucas Luetge took Maurer's place on the hill and got Prince Fielder on a grounder back to the mound to end the frame.
Maurer allowed all five runs on seven hits over 3 2/3 frames.
Seattle got a run back in the home half of the fourth when Robinson Cano ripped an RBI double to the wall in right-center.
Mat Harrison's wild pitch in the sixth allowed Cano to trot home for Seattle's second run, and Seager's solo shot to start the seventh off Shawn Tolleson made it 5-3.
Harrison, who was making his first start after missing the early portion of the season following back surgery, allowed no hits through three innings. He allowed just three hits and two runs over six innings.
"He was pretty good, especially in the fourth and the sixth when they tried to threaten. He was able to pitch out of it," Rangers manager Ron Washington said about Harrison.
Game Notes
The Rangers had won nine of 12 games. They finish up a six-game road trip with a 4-2 record ... Beltre now has a 16-game hitting streak against the Mariners ... Texas went 4-for-11 with six runners in scoring position while Seattle finished up 3-for-7 with RISP.
