Mariners take series from stingless Rays
Jun 9, 2014 - 10:31 PM St. Petersburg, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Robinson Cano struck a two-run double and Seattle's pitching staff combined for a five-hit shutout in a 3-0 victory over Tampa Bay in Monday's finale of a four-game set.James Jones added three hits and Stefen Romero knocked in the other run for the Mariners, who took three of four in the series and finished their road trip with a 6-1 record.
Erasmo Ramirez worked the first 4 2/3 innings, pulled due to five walks despite five strikeouts and four hits against. Joe Beimel (1-1), Dominic Leone, Danny Farquhar and Fernando Rodney finished off the contest by fanning four, walking one and yielding one more hit.
"Our starters have given us everything we've asked of them and probably a little bit more," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said, "Our bullpen is even better. It was a nice way to close out the road trip for us."
David Price (4-6) struck out 10 but allowed three runs on seven hits over eight innings in defeat for the Rays, who have dropped three in a row and 13 of their last 14.
James Loney doubled with two down in the bottom of the fifth and Ben Zobrist walked, before Beimel entered and fanned pinch-hitter Jerry Sands after Loney stole third.
Beimel exited after retiring the first batter of the sixth, then Leone finished off the frame with two quick outs.
In the seventh, Farquhar allowed a one-out double to Kevin Kiermaier and walked Evan Longoria, but escaped trouble when Loney grounded into a 4-3 double play. He then turned in a 1-2-3 eighth.
Rodney also retired the side in the ninth to capture his 18th save.
The Mariners loaded the bases in the third with one away on two solid singles (from John Buck and Willie Bloomquist) and a bunt base hit by Jones, then Cano dumped a two-run double to left and a Romero grounder plated another run.
"This is the way we have to play," Cano said. "We're the type of team that has to do anything to win a game. We don't have three or four guys who can hit 30 homers and have 100 RBIs. We've got to play the little game."
Tampa had two on in the home half after walks to Kiermaier and Loney, but Zobrist grounded out.
Ramirez worked out of a two-on, no-out jam in the fourth after Yunel Escobar and Jose Molina both fanned swinging and Desmond Jennings grounded to second and whose result at first was backed up by replay.
Game Notes
Seattle improved to 15-6 away from home since April 29, and its 6-1 mark is the club's best road trip by winning percentage since going 11-1 in 2003 against Kansas City, Minnesota, Philadelphia and the Mets from May 27-June 8 of that season ... Cano extended his road hitting streak to 18 games ... In an effort to try and stop this recent avalanche of losses, the Rays were visited by a Seminole medicine man before the contest.
