Rays power past Blue Jays 10-3

Jul 13, 2014 - 12:44 AM St. Petersburg, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Kevin Kiermaier had three hits and three RBI and Matt Joyce also knocked in three runs, leading the Tampa Bay Rays to a 10-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday.

Jake Odorizzi (5-8) pitched 6 2/3 innings for the Rays after he was moved up a day in the rotation to start in place of staff ace David Price, who the team says is battling an illness.

Odorizzi struck out seven and was charged with three runs -- two earned -- on six hits and two walks.

Dioner Navarro had two hits, including an RBI single for the Blue Jays, who won the opener of the three-game series 8-5 on Friday but have now lost seven of their last nine.

The Rays chased Toronto starter Drew Hutchinson during a six-run sixth inning that gave them an 8-2 lead.

Walks to James Loney and Yunel Escobar and a single by Brandon Guyer loaded the bases with no outs and pinch-hitter Cole Figueroa drew a one-out walk to force in the first run.

In his first at-bat since July 3, Figueroa faced Hutchison's final nine pitches.

"The tipping point for me in that game was Figgy's at-bat," Rays manager Joe Maddon said.

Kiermaier then greeted J.A. Happ with a two-run single through the left side to make it 5-2. Ben Zobrist added an RBI single and Joyce followed with a two- run base hit for Tampa Bay's six-run lead.

Hutchinson (6-8) was charged with six runs on six hits and five walks while striking out seven.

Juan Francisco hit a ground-rule double in the seventh and scored on Anthony Gose's single to get Toronto within five runs, but the Rays tacked on a pair in the bottom of the inning on Kiermaier's RBI single and Zobrist's sac fly.

Earlier, Kiermaier doubled in the first inning and scored on Joyce's sacrifice fly to give the Rays a 1-0 lead.

The Blue Jays tied the score in the top of the second after Colby Rasmus tripled and came home on Francisco's sac fly, and they took a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Navarro drove in Jose Bautista with a single.

Jose Molina's single with runners at first and second plated Loney in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score at 2-2 for Tampa Bay.

Game Notes

The Rays hope Price, who has been the subject of trade speculation, will be able to pitch Sunday against Toronto's R.A. Dickey. Price was replaced on the AL All-Star roster Saturday by Seattle closer Fernando Rodney.
