Rays top Orioles in Game 1 of doubleheader
Jun 28, 2014 - 12:14 AM Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Joyce had two hits, drove in a pair of runs and scored twice to lead the Tampa Bay Rays over the Baltimore Orioles 5-2 in the opener of a doubleheader at Camden Yards on Friday afternoon.Brandon Guyer added three hits, all doubles, an RBI and two runs scored for the Rays, who have won two in a row. The six through nine hitters for Tampa Bay ended with six of the club's nine hits.
Alex Colome (1-0) got the spot start for the Rays and got the win, surrendering just one run on two hits in 5 2/3 innings of work. He struck out three and walked four, as the Rays have won four of their last six games.
Manny Machado had a homer, finishing with two of the three hits for the Orioles, who fell to 2-2 on their current 11-game homestand.
"He threw the ball well and kept us off-balance today," Machado said of Colome. "We didn't hit today, plain and simple."
Trailing 1-0 after the Orioles got a run in the first on a Chris Davis groundout, the Rays went ahead for good in the second.
Guyer doubled home the first run and then scored on a Joyce base hit. Tampa Bay added another run in the fourth when Joyce scored on a Jose Molina base hit and tallied two more runs in the sixth. Joyce again drove in a run and scored, this time on a Sean Rodriguez base hit, to make it 5-1.
"That's the thing we have to be able to do," Rays manager Joe Maddon said of his team bouncing right back after giving up the early lead. "We came right back with a two-spot and we got momentum. The vibe got better in the dugout very quickly."
Baltimore starter Kevin Gausman (3-2) was called up to start this game and serve as the 26th man on the roster for the doubleheader. He ended up suffering the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits, striking out one and walking four, in five-plus innings.
Baltimore got the final run of the game in the seventh, when Machado hit a solo homer.
Jake McGee worked a perfect ninth to earn his second save of the season.
