Braves edge Fish at rain-soaked Turner Field
Apr 14, 2015 - 5:48 AM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Atlanta Braves endured a pair of brief rain delays before moving back into the win column on Monday night.Eric Young Jr. had a pair of doubles and scored a run, Shelby Miller picked up his first win as a Brave and Atlanta edged the Miami Marlins 3-2 in the opener of a three-game set.
The two rain delays totaled 1 hour and 31 minutes, with the start of the game coming 52 minutes after the scheduled first pitch. There was then a 39-minute stoppage following the top of the fourth inning.
Surprising Atlanta began 5-0 prior to tallying its first loss Sunday against the New York Mets.
Miller (1-0), acquired in a trade from the St. Louis Cardinals for outfielder Jason Heyward during the offseason, surrendered a run on three hits and two walks over five innings.
"Solid performance," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said of Miller. "We got something going bottom of the fifth ... and he was in line for the win."
Mat Latos (0-2) allowed three runs -- two earned -- on five hits and three walks with five strikeouts for Miami, which is off to a 1-6 start.
"It's just a matter of putting things together," Latos said. "It will turn around."
The game was tied 1-1 before the Braves went ahead with two runs in the fifth.
Pinch-hitter Jace Peterson began the frame with a single and Young followed by banging a double off the top of the wall in center. Alberto Callaspo rolled a single up the middle to bring home Peterson and Young scored on Nick Markakis' sharply hit grounder through the hole on the left side to make it 3-1.
Cody Martin tossed two shutout innings following Miller's departure in the fifth and Jim Johnson blanked the Fish in the eighth.
Jason Grilli, though, ran into trouble in the ninth but still picked up his fourth save of the season.
Martin Prado doubled to start the frame against his former team, but Grilli followed by fanning Michael Morse and Marcel Ozuna. Jarrod Saltalamacchia walked and Prado came home on Adeiny Hechavarria's single to left. Grilli, though, struck out pinch-hitter John Baker to end the game.
Earlier, a Christian Yelich one-out RBI groundout in the third began the scoring and Christian Bethancourt scored on a Latos wild pitch in the fourth to knot the score.
Game Notes
Chris Johnson posted his fourth double for Atlanta ... The Braves were 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position, while the Marlins finished 1-for-9 ... Miami has scored two runs or less in five of its first seven games ... Latos' ERA sits at 17.36 after two starts.
