Angels pummel A's
Apr 22, 2015 - 6:02 AM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Johnny Giavotella homered and drove in a career-high four runs to power the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim to a 14-1 victory over the Oakland Athletics Tuesday in the second of a four-game set.Kole Calhoun supplied a three-run homer among his four hits and scored three times and David Freese drove in two runs for the Angels, who ended a three- game skid with their first home win of the season.
"We knew we were going to hit sometime," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "Hopefully, tonight will be a catalyst for us. We had good at-bats all the way through."
Hector Santiago (2-1) earned the win after surrendering just one run and three hits with eight strikeouts over six strong frames.
Billy Butler's solo shot accounted for Oakland's lone run and starter Drew Pomeranz (1-2) was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs -- four earned -- on eight hits in five-plus innings of work.
"We didn't play a clean game tonight," Athletics manager Bob Melvin said. "It was a bad game all around."
The Angels opened the scoring in second inning. C.J. Cron reached on a force out, Chris Iannetta stroked a two-out single and Giavotella plated them by smacking a 3-2 fastball over the wall in left-center field. Calhoun singled and scored later in the frame on Oakland shortstop Marcus Semien's fielding error for a 4-0 lead.
Butler got a run back for the A's during the third with a two-out blast to center.
Los Angeles added six more runs in the sixth. Cron led off the frame with a double to right and came home two batters later on Giavotella's liner to left. Calhoun got aboard with a single and Mike Trout was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Giavotella raced home on an R.J. Alvarez wild pitch, Freese stroked a two-run base hit and Erick Aybar and Collin Cowgill each provided RBI singles for a 10-1 advantage.
The Angels increased their lead to 14-1 in the seventh. Calhoun added a three- run blast off Alvarez and Taylor Featherston's sacrifice fly scored Trout, who doubled following Calhoun's homer.
