Fiery Royals resume set with White Sox
Apr 24, 2015 - 2:45 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Kansas City Royals have been a bit feisty at the start of the season, but the Chicago White Sox were having none of it from the defending American League champions. The Royals and White Sox resume on Friday night what is already a heated four- game series.
Kansas City picked up its fourth victory in five games with last night's 3-2 victory in 13 innings, with Eric Hosmer's two-out, run-scoring double in the top of the last frame sealing things off.
Hosmer's heroics capped an eventful game that saw the clubs come to blows in the seventh inning.
Tempers flared after Royals starter Yordano Ventura fielded a comebacker from Adam Eaton and shouted an expletive at the Chicago outfielder before tossing the ball to first base. Both teams immediately ran on to the field, with a few punches being thrown prior to order being eventually restored after several minutes.
Ventura and White Sox starter Chris Sale were ejected for their part of the melee, as were Kansas City's Lorenzo Cain and Edinson Volquez as well as Chicago hurler Jeff Samardzija.
Tensions had heightened prior to the incident, as Ventura hit Jose Abreu with a pitch in the fourth inning and Sale plunked Mike Moustakas a frame later that triggered a warning to both clubs.
Both starters were still in the game at the time of the brawl. Ventura, who also was ejected for throwing at a hitter in his previous outing Saturday against Oakland, fanned eight while yielding two runs on five hits over seven innings. Sale scattered nine hits and held Kansas City to two runs through seven innings.
Hosmer and Moustakas both ended 3-for-5, while Kendrys Morales knocked in two runs with a first-inning single before Kansas City went scoreless over the next 11 frames.
The White Sox mustered only seven hits in the opener of this four-game set, with Abreu finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI double. Abreu has 11 RBI while going 11-of-25 during a six-game hitting streak, but Chicago has lost five of eight.
Jose Quintana will try to even this set tonight for the White Sox and picked up his first career win over the Royals. He is 0-6 in this matchup with a 4.66 earned run average in 13 starts.
Quintana beat Cleveland for his first win of the season on April 14, but then suffered his first loss after dropping a horrid 9-1 decision at Detroit on Sunday. The 26-year-old southpaw lasted four-plus innings and was charged with a career-high nine runs on 10 hits. He also allowed two homers, including a grand slam.
"You just chalk it up to a bad day for him," Chicago manager Robin Ventura said about Quintana, who is 1-1 with an 8.40 ERA through his three starts.
Danny Duffy counters for the Royals and is 1-0 with a 5.51 ERA in three starts.
The left-handed Duffy avoided heavy damage on Sunday versus Oakland, getting a no-decision in his club's 4-2 win. Duffy allowed two runs on four hits over five innings, but also walked five batters and fanned five.
Duffy, 26, is 2-1 with a 4.57 ERA in five meetings with the White Sox.
The Royals swept a three-game set at home versus the White Sox from April 6-9 and have won 15 of the last 18 meetings.
