Cabrera powers Tigers past Indians
Apr 27, 2015 - 12:19 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Victor Martinez made the Cleveland Indians pay for pitching around Miguel Cabrera on Saturday. The Indians chose to pitch to the Detroit slugger in Sunday's finale at Comerica Park and likely regretted it.
Cabrera went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and three RBI as the Tigers won 8-6.
J.D. Martinez hit a two-run double and Ian Kinsler also knocked in a run for the Tigers, who snapped a four-game slide with Saturday's 4-1 win. Rajai Davis had three hits and scored three runs before exiting in the eighth with right groin tightness.
Kyle Lobstein (2-1) pitched the first seven innings for Detroit, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks and striking out four.
"It was good to win two out of three after losing three out of four to the Yankees and kind of get back on a sort of winning track," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said.
Angel Nesbitt followed Lobstein in relief and gave up singles to the first three batters he faced, the last one producing a run. Brandon Moss hit a sacrifice fly off Blaine Hardy to trim Cleveland's deficit to 7-5.
Cabrera lofted a sac fly with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth, which proved to be critical when the Indians brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth.
Closer Joakim Soria gave up a leadoff home run to pinch-hitter David Murphy, then walked Jason Kipnis with one out. After shortstop Jose Iglesias made a great over-the-shoulder grab on a popup in shallow left field, Soria retired Michael Brantley on a grounder to earn his seventh save of the season.
Carlos Santana and Ryan Raburn each had two hits and one RBI for the Indians, while Moss knocked in two runs.
Cleveland starter Carlos Carrasco (2-2) was tagged for five runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Davis swiftly extended his hitting streak to nine games with a leadoff triple in the first and scored on a single by Kinsler. Cabrera, who walked four times -- three intentional -- on Saturday, singled to put men on the corners, and Victor Martinez hit a fly to right to make it 2-0.
Cabrera led off the third with a single and eventually scored when J.D. Martinez grounded into a double play. J.D. Martinez ripped a grounder down the left-field line with the bases loaded in the fifth to make it 5-2.
"I had a chance to get a double play against (J.D.) Martinez, but I got behind in the count, and when I tried to get a strike, he hit it," Carrasco said.
In the sixth, Cabrera launched an opposite-field blast to right off reliever Scott Atchison.
Moss scored on a fielder's choice in the seventh.
