Quiet riot: Six-run first sends O's past White Sox
Apr 30, 2015 - 12:28 AM Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Davis struck the big blow in a six- run first inning with a three-run homer, and Baltimore went on to post an 8-2 victory over Chicago at an empty Camden Yards. The first two games of this three-game series were postponed due to protests in the city.
After conferring with local officials, it was determined that the contest would be played without fan admittance in order to minimize safety concerns. First pitch was also moved up five hours to avoid conflicting with a citywide curfew that begins at 10 p.m.
Monday's and Tuesday's postponed games will be made up as part of a doubleheader in Baltimore on Thursday, May 28.
The unusual situation came about due to protests in the city that turned violent in the wake of the tragic death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray, who died from a spinal injury while in police custody over a week ago.
"It was just a surreal environment. I really don't think we want to play in another one like this. I don't think they do either," noted White Sox manager Robin Ventura.
Caleb Joseph added two hits and drove in two, while Manny Machado also homered among his three hits and scored three times. Everth Cabrera doubled twice and knocked in a run for the Orioles.
Ubaldo Jimenez (2-1) allowed two unearned runs on three hits while striking out six over seven solid innings.
"We all know everything the city is going through," Jimenez said. "So that's something you put in your mind, you have to go out there and do something that would be good for the fans."
Avisail Garcia finished with two hits and Geovany Soto drove in a run for the White Sox.
Jeff Samardzija (1-2) was tagged in defeat for eight runs -- seven earned -- on 10 hits over five full frames.
Baltimore seized control at the outset, sending 11 men to the plate in its first turn against Samardzija. The bases were loaded with none out thanks to a walk to Alejandro De Aza, Jose Abreu error and base hit from Delmon Young, then Adam Jones' sacrifice fly preceded a three-run blast from Davis.
"We were yelling, and then we kind of felt bad," O's closer Zach Britton said of his dugout's reaction to Davis' homer. "You don't want to over-do it because you knew everyone could hear you. It was just weird because it kind of tempered our celebration a little bit."
Machado then doubled and scored on Cabrera's double, and he came home when Joseph singled to right. De Aza singled two batters later, but Jimmy Paredes grounded out to end the rally at 6-0.
The O's picked up another run in the third as Machado singled, Cabrera doubled and Joseph added another RBI hit.
Chicago finally dented Jimenez in the fifth. Adam LaRoche walked, moved up on an infield hit from Garcia then scored when Manny Machado threw wild when trying to start a double play. Soto's grounder plated Garcia.
Machado came back with a one-out solo shot to left center in the home half.
Jimenez erased Melky Cabrera by inducing an inning-ending double play from Abreu, then completed his outing with a 1-2-3 seventh.
Kevin Gausman struck out two in the eighth and Britton stranded a runner on third in the ninth by striking out LaRoche.
