Blue Jays use five-run fourth to beat Indians
May 1, 2015 - 5:05 AM Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Kevin Pillar hit a two-run double during a five-run fourth inning, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Cleveland Indians by a 5-1 margin in the opener of a four-game series.Danny Valencia, Russell Martin and Jonathan Diaz had one RBI apiece for the Blue Jays, who improved to 2-5 on a 10-game road trip.
"Top to bottom we're a tough lineup," Martin said.
Toronto starter Daniel Norris gave up four hits over three scoreless innings. Jeff Francis (1-0) allowed one run on three hits while striking out three over 2 1/3 innings.
Michael Brantley went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Indians, who have lost five of six. TJ House (0-4) gave up five runs on four hits with three walks over three-plus innings.
"They made an adjustment," House said. "And I definitely didn't make one fast enough to keep them off-balance a little bit."
The Indians wasted a golden scoring opportunity in the second. Ryan Raburn singled and Lonnie Chisenhall and Roberto Perez walked to load the bases with one out. But Michael Bourn popped out and Jason Kipnis flied out to end the threat.
Cleveland left men on second and third one inning later, as Raburn grounded out to end the frame.
The Blue Jays broke a scoreless tie with a five-run fourth. Jose Bautista walked, advanced to third on Edwin Encarnacion's single and scored on Valencia's single to right. Martin followed with an RBI double down the right- field line. Pillar then hit a two-run double to left, chasing House from the game.
Ryan Webb took over on the mound and got Dalton Pompey to ground out. Pillar moved to third on the play and raced home on Diaz's sacrifice bunt.
In the fifth, Bautista was thrown out at the home trying to score on Encarnacion's single.
The Indians got on the board in the bottom half of the frame. Mike Aviles doubled and crossed the plate on Brantley's single to left. After Carlos Santana grounded into a fielder's choice, Brandon Moss hit a deep fly ball to center. Pillar made a great catch against the wall to keep it 5-1.
Perez grounded into an inning-ending double play with men on the corners in the eighth.
Game Notes
Raburn went 3-for-4 for the Indians, who went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 ... Cleveland had 11 hits, compared to seven for Toronto.
