Blue Jays rough up Indians
May 3, 2015 - 5:38 AM Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Jose Bautista drove in four runs as the Toronto Blue Jays pounded the Cleveland Indians, 11-4, in the third of a four- game series.Edwin Encarnacion drove in a pair of runs and Russell Martin was 3-for-5 with a solo home run and two runs scored for the Blue Jays, who had lost six of eight coming in. Aaron Sanchez (2-2) allowed two runs on four hits while walking six and striking out five in 5 2/3 innings.
"It came against a tough pitcher but we were able to grind out some at-bats," Toronto coach John Gibbons said of the 11 runs scored.
Jason Kipnis went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored for the Indians, who have dropped six of their last eight. Corey Kluber (0-4) was touched for five runs on eight hits in five-plus innings on the mound.
With the score tied in the fifth, the Blue Jays went on top when Bautista punched a bases-loaded single to center that plated two for a 4-2 advantage.
Toronto put the game away with a six-run sixth inning. Danny Valencia reached base when Lonnie Chisenhall's bad throw allowed him to reach base, scoring one run. After Devon Travis walked to load the bases, a fielder's choice from Josh Donaldson scored another run. Bautista's two-run double, along with RBI singles from Encarnacion and Kevin Pillar made it a 10-2 game.
Chisenhall drove home a run in the eighth thanks to a bad play from Travis, and Roberto Perez added a sac fly later in the frame to make it a 10-4 contest.
Michael Saunders' RBI single in the ninth accounted for the final score.
Encarnacion's RBI double in the first gave the Blue Jays an early 1-0 lead.
Carlos Santana's run-scoring groundout in the first tied the game for the Indians, and the team made it 2-1 in the third on Michael Brantley's RBI single.
Martin's leadoff home run in the fourth, his fourth of the season, tied the game at 2-2.
Game Notes
Cleveland's bullpen had gone 12 straight innings without allowing a run ... The Blue Jays were 5-for-14 with runners in scoring position, while the Indians were 1-for-10 and stranded nine.
