Gardner, Yankees down Red Sox

May 4, 2015 - 6:48 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Brett Gardner smacked a three-run homer among his two hits and two runs scored as the New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox 8-5 in the finale of a three-game set.

Jacoby Ellsbury posted four hits and scored twice and Mark Teixeira cracked a two-run shot for the Yankees, who swept the series and have won six of their last seven games.

"It's not easy to do," New York manager Joe Girardi said of the sweep. "We had some excellent pitching and some timely hitting."

Adam Warren (2-1) allowed four runs on four hits and two walks over 5 2/3 frames.

Andrew Miller got David Ortiz to line out to center with the bases loaded in the ninth to end the game and notch his 10th save of the season.

Joe Kelly (1-1) surrendered five runs on nine hits over 4 2/3 innings for Boston, which has dropped six of its last eight games.

"For us to right our course, we still need to point to that rotation to continue to give us quality innings and keep the game under control until our offense gets on track," Red Sox manager John Farrell said.

The Yankees raced out to an 8-0 lead after plating two runs in the first and a trio of runs in both the third and sixth innings.

Ellsbury led off the game with a single to right before Brett Gardner grounded into a force out. Teixeira cracked his two-run blast two batters later.

Ellsbury and Alex Rodriguez sandwiched singles around a Gardner strikeout to begin the third. Teixeira popped out, but Brian McCann split the gap in right- center to bring home two and he scored on Carlos Beltran's two-bagger down the right-field line.

Gardner's three-run blast to right in the sixth made it 8-0.

The Red Sox, who didn't register a hit until Mookie Betts' double to lead off the fourth, pushed five runs across in the sixth to get right back in it.

Ortiz hit an RBI double to left, Pablo Sandoval lined a run-scoring base hit to left and Napoli launched his three-run shot into left-center for an 8-5 game.
