Hill, D-backs beat Rockies 13-7 in doubleheader opener
May 6, 2015 - 11:11 PM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Aaron Hill and Mark Trumbo homered and A.J. Pollock scored four runs to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 13-7 win over the Colorado Rockies in the opener of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon. The teams combined for 30 hits after being rained out on consecutive nights. The game that was postponed Tuesday was being made up as the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader.
Hill had four hits and four RBI, including a three-run homer. Trumbo belted a two-run shot, Pollock added two doubles and three walks and Ender Inciarte had four hits for the Diamondbacks, who snapped a three-game losing streak.
Right-hander Josh Collmenter (3-3) picked up his second win over the Rockies in eight days despite giving up five runs and 10 hits in seven-plus innings.
Justin Morneau, Nick Hundley and Drew Stubbs homered for the Rockies, who have lost six in a row.
Tyler Matzek (2-1) took the loss Wednesday after giving up four runs on three hits and six walks in just two-plus innings.
"I'm disappointed I let the team down and that we had to go to the bullpen so early, especially in the first game of a doubleheader," said Matzek.
Matzek walked Jordan Pacheco and Nick Ahmed on just nine pitches to start the second inning, leading to the first three Arizona runs. Inciarte had an RBI single and Trumbo drove a pitch the other way to right for his two-run homer.
Yasmany Tomas hit an RBI single to chase Matzek in the third inning after Pollock led off with a walk and stole second base and the Diamondbacks blew the game open with a five-run fourth.
Trumbo had an RBI double and Tomas singled in a run before Hill's three-run blast to left made it 9-0.
Collmenter faced the minimum through four innings before Morneau led off the fifth with a homer to center field. Nolan Arenado followed with a double, went to third on Carlos Gonzalez's single and scored when Inciarte made a leaping catch at the left-field wall on Hundley's drive.
Pollock doubled in the sixth and scored on a single by Tomas, who later came home on Pacheco's sacrifice fly.
Hundley homered for Colorado with one out in the bottom of the seventh and Pollock scored his fourth run after leading off the eighth with a double. The Rockies trimmed their deficit to 12-6 in the bottom of the eighth on Stubbs' homer and Hundley's RBI double.
Rockies reliever John Axford entered the ninth inning with a zero ERA in five appearances but gave up a run without getting an out after surrendering a walk and two singles. The Diamondbacks left the bases loaded and Colorado scored its last run on Morneau's double in the bottom of the ninth.
