Rizzo, Cubs end Cardinals' winning streak

May 7, 2015 - 5:57 AM St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Anthony Rizzo homered and drove in three runs to power the Chicago Cubs to a 6-5 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the third of a four-game set on Wednesday.

Kris Bryant supplied two hits, an RBI and two runs scored, while Jorge Soler and Starlin Castro each drove in a run for the Cubs, who ended a four-game skid..

"We're fighting," said Rizzo. "We are neck and neck with them. It's a big win."

Starter Jon Lester (2-2) earned the win after allowing four runs -- one earned -- on seven hits with six strikeouts over seven innings.

Jhonny Peralta homered, Yadier Molina brought in two runs and starter Lance Lynn (1-3) was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs and eight hits over six frames for the Cardinals, who had their eight-game winning streak snapped.

"He was able to go deep for us and keep us in the game," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said of Lynn.

In the fifth, Addison Russell led off with a ground-rule double to right and moved to third on a groundout. Following a Chris Coghlan walk, Rizzo brought both runners in with a double to right, making it a 5-2 game.

With two outs and runners on first and second in the sixth, Molina and Pete Kozma hit back-to-back RBI singles to get the Cardinals within a run.

Bryant doubled to start the eight and promptly came around on Soler's grounder up the middle. Kolten Wong's run-scoring base hit with runners on first and second in the home half made it a 6-5 game heading into the ninth.

Hector Rondon worked around a leadoff single and runners on the corners in the ninth to post his sixth save of the season.

The Cubs wasted no time getting on the board. Coghlan worked a one-out walk, moved to second on a groundout and scored on Bryant's line-drive single to center. Soler singled to place runners on the corners and Castro followed with an RBI single for a 2-0 score.

Molina cut the deficit in half with an run-scoring double an inning later.

Rizzo got the run back for Chicago in the third by belting a 1-1 curveball over the wall in right center for a 3-1 lead.

Peralta's leadoff blast got the Cardinals within one yet again during the fourth.
