Infante's sac fly in 10th lifts KC past Detroit
May 11, 2015 - 5:49 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Omar Infante's go-ahead sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th inning lifted the Kansas City Royals to a 2-1 win over the Detroit Tigers in a rain-drenched rubber match of a three-game set.Alex Gordon was hit by a pitch to lead off the 10th and advanced to second on an Angel Nesbitt (0-1) wild pitch. Salvador Perez moved him to third with a groundout and Infante plated him by lifting his sac fly to center.
There was a one-hour, 43-minute rain delay prior to the bottom of the ninth inning.
Jason Frasor (1-0) and Greg Holland worked out of bases-loaded jams in the ninth and 10th innings, respectively, to notch the win and save.
Andrew Romine singled to begin the bottom of the 10th and Holland issued walks to Anthony Gose and Ian Kinsler.
Miguel Cabrera, who would've been due up had Detroit manager Brad Ausmus not taken him out for a pinch-runner in the ninth, had to watch on the bench instead as Hernan Perez walked up to the plate. Perez then bounced into a 5-2-3 double play.
Victor Martinez walked to re-load the bases, but Holland struck out Yoenis Cespedes to end the game and record his sixth save.
Jarrod Dyson smacked a triple among his two hits for the Royals, who have won four of their last six games. KC starter Chris Young allowed an unearned run on three hits over six innings.
Tigers starter Shane Greene surrendered a run on four hits over eight frames for Detroit, which dropped the final two games of the series.
The Royals opened the scoring in the second, but the Tigers tied the game in the third.
Kendrys Morales doubled to lead off the second and scored on a double by Gordon.
Detroit used a two-out rally in the third to knot the contest. Gose reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on Infante's throwing error. Kinsler's base hit to center plated him.
Neither team mustered much offense from there, with Detroit's threat in the ninth the best opportunity to push across a run.
Cabrera worked a walk to start the ninth and Victor Martinez followed with a single. Cespedes popped out and J.D. Martinez flied out before Nick Castellanos walked to load the bases. James McCann lined out to center, however, to end the frame.
Game Notes
Holland hasn't blown a save since July 24, 2014. He's 15-of-16 in save opportunities in his career against Detroit ... Infante picked up his 500th career RBI ... Detroit was 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base.
