Kang leads Pirates past Cardinals
May 10, 2015 - 11:06 PM Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jung Ho Kang homered to open the scoring and his RBI single in the seventh closed it to help the Pittsburgh Pirates in a 4-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.Jordy Mercer and Gregory Polanco each drove in a run for the Pirates, who took two of three in the series.
"I think these two wins (in the series) were a big-time team effort," Mercer said.
Jared Hughes (1-1) picked up the win in relief of Jeff Locke, who went 6 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on five hits.
Kolten Wong homered in defeat and Jason Heyward knocked in a run for the Cardinals.
Mitch Harris (1-1) was dealt the loss for his role in the seventh inning.
"We had a chance to win the last couple of games. We don't really do the whole series thing, it's important to go game-to-game," Cards manager Mike Matheny said.
Jason Heyward tied the game with a single in the seventh, and Kang followed that up with an RBI knock in the home half for a 4-3 lead.
St. Louis went quietly in the eighth and Mark Melancon picked up his seventh save with a scoreless ninth.
Kang homered with one away in the first to give the Pirates and early lead, then Mercer made it 2-0 with his RBI single in the fourth that drove in Starling Marte.
St. Louis tied the game with two outs in the sixth. Peter Bourjos singled to left and Wong chased him home with his fourth homer of the season.
Pittsburgh responded in the home half as Andrew McCutchen doubled to lead things off and scored on Polanco's sacrifice fly.

The Cardinals continue their six-game road trip in Cleveland on Tuesday ... The Pirates have won three of four overall ... Cardinals starter Tyler Lyons allowed three runs -- two earned -- over five-plus innings of work.
