Red Sox edge Mariners

May 15, 2015 - 7:05 AM Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Mookie Betts drove in the winning run in the ninth to give the Boston Red Sox a 2-1 win over the Seattle Mariners in the opener of a four-game set.

Shane Victorino hit a home run for the Red Sox, who have won four of their last five. Joe Kelly allowed a run on five hits with three walks in 6 1/3 innings, while Matt Barnes (2-0) picked up the win after pitching a scoreless eighth.

"I feel like everything is going in the right direction," Victorino said of his season. "A lot of hard work... staying focus and keep working hard to stay healthy."

Logan Morrison drove in the only run of the game for the Mariners, who have dropped their past two after winning four straight. Roenis Elias allowed a run on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings.

With Fernando Rodney (1-2) on the mound, Brock Holt led off with a double and moved to third on a sac bunt from Xander Bogaerts. After Pablo Sandoval was hit by a pitch, Betts lofted a fly ball to left that was deep enough to score Huff, but it didn't matter as Rickie Weeks dropped the ball and the Red Sox had a 2-1 lead.

Koji Uehara pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his eighth save of the season.

The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth when Victorino clubbed a pitch over the wall in left to give the Red Sox a 1-0 lead.

Seattle loaded the bases with one out in the home fourth, but Mike Zunino struck out and Dustin Ackley grounded out to end the frame.

"It's a nasty funk that we are in," Mariners coach Lloyd McClendon said his team's poor approach with runners in scoring position.

The Mariners, though, tied the game in the sixth. Nelson Cruz worked a one-out walk and Kyle Seager followed with a single. A wild pitch moved both runners up a base and Morrison tied the game with a ground out to second.

In the seventh, the Red Sox had two men on with two outs, but Charlie Furbush came out of the bullpen and got David Ortiz to fly out.

Seattle had a man on first and one out in the home seventh when Justin Ruggiano drove a pitch into right field, but Victorino tracked it down for a nice catch and was able to throw to first to double up Chris Taylor.

Game Notes

Victorino's homer was his first since July 25, 2014 ... Boston was 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and stranded 11, while Seattle was 0-for-6 with RISP and left seven.
