May 16, 2015 - 6:52 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jordan Zimmermann tossed six scoreless innings and Bryce Harper homered while driving in two as part of a 3-for-4 performance, as Washington ripped San Diego by a 10-0 count on Friday.Zimmermann (3-2) allowed six hits and a walk while striking out six. A.J. Cole finished off the shutout with three innings of one-hit ball to cap his major- league debut with his first save.
Ryan Zimmerman, Danny Espinosa and Ian Desmond also knocked in two runs apiece for the Nationals, who have won seven of their last nine outings and set a franchise record for runs scored at Petco Park.
"It's huge any time you get support early," Zimmermann said. "You can settle in and just throw strikes."
Yangervis Solarte collected two of the Padres' six hits, as they saw their two-game win streak snapped.
Odrisamer Despaigne (2-2) was dented for seven runs on 10 hits over three full frames in the setback.
"He just couldn't get anything going," San Diego manager Bud Black said of Despaigne. "He got himself in a hole and couldn't get out.
The Nats essentially wrapped up the game with a four-run first inning, batting around in the process. Harper and Desmond framed the rally with RBI singles with Zimmerman drawing a bases-loaded walk and Wilson Ramos grounding into a run-scoring double play in the interim.
Desmond followed with an RBI single and Espinosa doubled home two more to push the lead to 7-0 in the third.
Harper's one-out solo shot gave Washington an eight-run edge in the fourth, Zimmerman's sacrifice fly brought home Yunel Escobar in the sixth and Denard Span's RBI hit in the seventh capped the scoring.
Game Notes
Washington outfielder Jayson Werth left the game after being hit on the left wrist by a pitch in the second inning ... X-rays taken proved negative and Werth will be re-evaluated on Saturday ...
