Angels slip past O's
May 16, 2015 - 4:16 AM Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Jered Weaver pitched into the eighth inning to help the Los Angeles Angels to a 3-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles in the opener of a three-game set.Weaver (2-4) won his second straight start as he allowed just a run on three hits with a walk and three strikeouts over 7 1/3 innings for the Angels, who have won four straight. Albert Pujols hit a solo home run while Johnny Giavotella and Carlos Perez each drove in a run.
"He did a great job against a team that lets you know if you're missing spots," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said of Weaver. "He used all of his pitches."
J.J. Hardy hit a solo homer for the Orioles, who have lost seven of their last 10. Wei-Yin Chen (1-2) gave up two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out seven in seven-plus innings.
"Losses are no fun no matter how you get them," said Hardy. "It was nice to see Chen go out there and throw the ball well. We just didn't score enough."
The Angels took a 1-0 lead in the first when Pujols stroked a two-out, solo homer to left, his sixth of the year.
In the second, the Angels added to their lead as Erick Aybar led off with a double, took third on a groundout from Giavotella and came home when Perez followed with a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.
Baltimore didn't get a runner to second base until the fifth when Hardy hit a soft roller towards first that Weaver misplayed and threw away, leaving Hardy at second. Weaver, though, got Rey Navarro to fly out and Caleb Joseph to strike out to end the frame.
The Orioles finally got on the board in the eighth when Hardy led off the frame with his second homer of the year. Manny Machado hit a two-out single off Joe Smith later in the inning, but Alejandro De Aza flied out.
Giavotella's sac fly in the ninth gave the Angels an insurance run, and Huston Street worked a scoreless home ninth to pick up his 12th save of the season.
Game Notes
Machado has reached base safely in a career-high 20 straight games, and also has a seven-game hitting streak ... Matt Shoemaker takes the hill for the Angels on Saturday, while Bud Norris will toss the ball for the Orioles.
