Francoeur, Galvis help Phillies clip D-backs
May 16, 2015 - 4:32 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jeff Francoeur drove in the go-ahead run with a pinch-hit single in the seventh inning as the Philadelphia Phillies edged the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3 in the opener of a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park.Francoeur's hit followed Freddy Galvis' game-tying two-run single.
Ryan Howard opened the scoring with an RBI double in the sixth for the Phillies, who have won a season-high three straight games.
Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run double and Ender Inciarte collected three hits for Arizona, which has dropped five of seven.
The Phillies quickly answered with three runs in the seventh after the Diamondbacks scored three in the top of the inning.
Arizona reliever Daniel Hudson emerged from the bullpen to begin the seventh and gave up singles to both of the batters he faced. The runners advance when Oliver Perez (1-1) threw a wild pitch and scored on Galvis' blooper to left- center field.
Once Francoeur was introduced as a pinch-hitter, Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale countered by bringing in Enrique Burgos, who surrendered the hit that allowed the go-ahead run to score. Francoeur was thrown out trying for a double by left fielder David Peralta.
"We had all those guys fresh and had them ready," Hale said of his bullpen. "We just couldn't get it done."
Luis Garcia tossed the final two innings for the Phillies to notch his first major league save.
Phillies starter Chad Billingsley tossed six scoreless innings, but was removed after the first two batters reached in the seventh. A.J. Pollock tied the game at 1-1 with a two-out single off Justin De Fratus and Goldschmidt followed by crushing a double to center field.
"I went out there to give the team a chance to win," said Billingsley. "Overall, it was a really good team effort late in the game."
Elvis Araujo (1-0) struck out Peralta to end the inning and wound up earning his first major league win after the Phillies rallied in the bottom of the seventh.
